I'm ordering a new tri-tube pontoon boat and I'm trying to decide between a Mercury Fourstroke 250 hp V8 or the Mercury Verado 250 hp V8. Does anyone have an opinion on which would be the smarter choice?

you are on a pontoon, both of those motors will push that brick in the water at the same speed

The prop is part of your gear train. Engine RPM/lower unit reduction ratio x prop pitch, assuming equal prop slip and identical props other than pitch will give you the same number. I never did figure out why things like the 90 hp Merc runs a 2.33:1 gearbox and the 115 runs a 2.0 on the same lower unit with the engine RPMs spec'd the same in some cases. I know they advertise the 90 as the work engine and the 115 the play offering. Well that picture in my Avatar is a 90 triple 2 stroker and the speedometer is kissing 50 at 5600 RPM Ballistic 13+ x 24 XP 3 blade SS. I call that playing, not working!

Personally, would take the #70 lighter 4 stroke over the Verado

Also keep in mind that the stated output (HP) can vary plus on minus 10% of actual.

Do your home work….not out of the realm of possibility that one motor puts out 260 Hp and the other 240 Hp

Above 350 and higher yes
Not a man to argue with someone like yourself AD…but I could have sworn they were for some reason. Was also almost sure there were sc verado, even smaller than this. Not sure why that’s in my head.
Maybe it’s the older ones I have in mind. Was there not even smaller 4 and 6 cylinder supercharger verado too ?
