How do you know when to replace the tensioner or belt?

Hi all,

The belt on my 2003 VP engine looks to have some deflection, more than is expected - please see this on the attached video.

The question is when should the tensioner be replaced, it's not floppy in fact it still holds well when pushing against a prybar.

Could this be as simple as replacing a newer belt, or can the automatic tensioner be adjusted somehow?

Thanks

The only thing ever happens to the tensioner is the bearing in the pulley starts making noise. If cracks start showing on the underside i=of the belt then it is time to change it.

Have seen tensioner housings crack, springs fail/break, pulleys break, and bearings fail. Best to remove the belt and tensioner, inspect for damage and wear on the belt, replace as needed.

The video shows little belt dust on and around the engine, not uncommon for Volvo belts to shed a lot of dust. My guess is you're fine but good to inspect as part of routine maintenance

Thanks both.

As stated the tensioner looks fine, no cracks or play and solid when pushing against a prybar.

Is it possible to get another belt, possibly a size down (few mm)? Someone at the boat yard pointed this out when the engine was running and suggested the tensioner.

Thanks
