Alpha lower unit crack in strange place?

Take a look at pics.This is an alpha drive that I keep as a spare.I have had this for a long time
and never noticed since I have several layers of paint on it.I assume empty cavity on inside of
the cracked area?? Am I jb welding? Charlie

That is a drain cavity that did not drain and cracked the case outward. The bottom of that cavity is supposed to have a drain hole . Once filled with sand, saly, debris it cannot drain and will result in a crack. During normal servicing a long drill bit is tun down the cavity to clear the crud. Worst case you can drill another drain hole above the clogged one is you cant clear it

Thanks for the clarification.I knew it was not the oil cavity .I didnt know about the drain passage though.I typically dig the crap next to the shift shaft out with a screwdriver but will dig deeper next time or get a looong drill bit.Guess I have 2 drains in that lower now.Charlie

You can clean it out, send it down and jb weld it . Same thing happened to my grandfathers boat occasionally had to re expoxy it but ran that way for years no issue
