Will evinrude work on johnson

How is everyone? So I have a J140tlens which is a johnson 140 1992. Lower unit has failed. I just purchased a 1996 evinrude ocean pro lower unit 20” will it work? Casing is almost identical except shift shaft looks a bit different and drive shaft is a bit shorter by less than an inch. Will it work please help!!!

Any pictures?-----Only difference between Johnson and Evinrude is the color of paint.-----You would have to swap your shift rod into the replacement gearcase and set the shift rod height.---Then give it a try.-----Is driveshaft 1/4" shorter or 7/8" shorter ?

Case is identical but driveshaft is 7/8” shorter

You will have to install the driveshaft ( if it is good ) from your 1992 model.----Lot of work and pinion gear must be shimmed correctly !

I was really hoping that shaft collar was deep enough to fit it

I will still need to change it over which seems like a pretty major job right because of shims?

If it is a 2 piece driveshaft it might just be you need to swap out the upper driveshaft.---No shimming required.

Well yea but I can’t wait 6 weeks I need to be out there. Is it really that hard?

Will I be able to use my driveshaft from my original lower unit?

No ..you will need to get the 2 piece one.. Use the puller to remove the one from the 1996 unit and take the new driveshaft and pop it in place, reinstall impeller components and install you old shift rod to spec height..
