No spark on my 1984 115 horsepower TOP

So I picked up this 1984 inline 6 recently. When I went to look at it it fired right up. Brought it home and put it on my boat and hooked my battery leads to my truck with jumper cables. I turned the key on and checked the tilt and trim. When it didn't work I reversed the cables and it did work. At that point I tried to crank the engine over. Now I'm getting intermittent to no spark. What do I need to check? Thanks for your help.

Disconnect the rectifier from the stator. It may have shorted the stator to ground, when you reversed the battery cables.
Whereas the ign system is not connected to the battery, the rectifier is connected to the battery and directly to the stator and ign system.

If that doesn't work, disconnect the black/yellow killer wire at the switchboxes. You will need to choke the motor to stop it.

Is the Kill Switch for the Lanyard on the Control Box in the On Position? Hooking up the Battery backward fried the Rectifier instantly. As that engine has an ADI(Alternator Driven Ignition) it will run with a Dead Battery or no Battery. The Trim System will work whether or not the Key is on.

Key needs to be pushed in while cranking it over.----Battery should be load tested even if new.----Starter motor should be taken apart and inspected / ohm checked.-----Motor needs a new impeller before launching the boat !

What do I do once the rectifier is disconnected?

See if it has Spark/starts. And replace the Rectifier, if you keep the engine

You said it ran before you bought it. What else changed? You had to have unhooked the Wiring Harness, when removing the Motor from where it was to transfer it to your Boat. All wires hooked up correctly?

Yes I'm sure all wires are hooked up correctly the only thing I did wrong was was cross the battery cables. Once I connected the battery cables properly the engine cranks but won't start. I put it in ignition tester on the spark plugs and got intermittent or no spark.

Should this be on or off?

That flip switch on the control is the ign killer if you fall out of the boat. It normally has a lanyard connected to your person.

I guess I'll have to order a DVA adapter and start testing from the stator on down. It's it possible to blow the switch packs all at once on 12v?
