Good day guys,
I've got a 25hp Evinrude ('85) that I picked up last year and have finally been able to run. Since I don't know history I changed out the impeller/water pump, installed new fuel lines, cleaned up and put in a carb kit (Gaskets, Needle, Seat, Float, etc.). As Typically happens - I fired it up in the barrel in the yard and all seemed pretty good........did a little tweaking on the Air/Fuel idle screw after setting to the factory 1 1/4 turn.
Got to the lake and took it on a 16ft Lund that I also bought and overall was happy!!! It was stumbling a bit at first which I expected as it may not have run much in recent years/new carb hardware/etc. After opening it up a bit and working out of the stumble anywhere from 1/4 throttle or more it runs absolutely flawlessly. However coming into the dock and backing off the throttle I'm finding it quite a time to keep running and it seems to be loading up. Can give the throttle a couple quick/hard wraps and it'll REV up and clean up but is quick to get back to stumbling. It was set at factory 1 1/4 turn out on the idle mix so tried going leaner to the point it was stalling out (choked) and then came back out until it was smoky and stalling the other direction (rich). But no sweet spot.
I WILL state that one thing I forgot in all my servicing was new plugs (Stupid).......so that could be all my issue is and I'll swap some when I get back to the lake. They did look nice and clean/tan after a full throttle pull/kill - but I suppose that doesn't mean anything at what's happening at low RPM. But I figured if any of you guys have had a couple of these 20-35hp beasts and know of any little 'ticks' these motors might have to search for that'd be a start.
- Or if anyone might have a good carb on a shelf I've played this game enough that sometimes that might save a lot of headache too.
