Just spun a 17"prop on my new 2022 Mercury Sea Pro 150 HP, need to replace. The motor is on a 20' SeaRay Center Console, the 17P Prop might of had some slip in it all along as it only has 30 Hrs on it. The motor felt a little under power, when I purchased the new motor we used the prop off the original Mercury outboard.

Which prop would offer more top-end speed between a 17P or a 19P?

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks/Jerry

What is your current WOT rpm?

A 19” prop will give more speed but drop your WOT rpm

A 17” prop is typical for a boat of that size.

150 hp is a bit short on hp for that boat that size.

WOT is rated @ 5300 for this motor.

Will a prop slip easier with more weight in the boat, normally I only have me/1 other person in the boat. Yesterday I had 5 and that's when I notice the prop slipping?

I'm not necessarily looking for more top end speed, but more throttle power when driving in rough water.

Slip increases with load but doubt that’s your problem given the circumstances you outlined.

If your loosing speed relative to RPM the prop is slipping. 5300 rpm was 45 mph, but now 5300 is 40.5 mph = 10% slip

If you are unable to reach your WOT rpm your over propped for the load… you’ve run out of HP.

Running in the “rough” requires substantially more horsepower than flat conditions. My fuel consumption almost doubles in the rough.

You need more HP or a smaller prop to get “more throttle” given the load your running

Installed a new Stainless Prop, gave me quite a bit more power. When I purchased the new motor the dealer used my old prop, it must have been slipping when under a load and I just assumed that how the new motor ran. The extra weight in the boat the day it completely failed was the last straw.

Anyway, new power and all is great. Now have the power I expected from the new motor.

Thanks iBoats for this forum.
