Startmotor 3.0L bendix difference?

Hi all,

Installed a new startmotor on my 1997 3.0GS Volvo Penta but got grinding noise when starting so it doesn't interact with the flywheel well. When comparing the old and new one I noticed a difference in bendix size. Teeth # equal, diameter equal. The new one is the black one and the bendix at rest is longer it seems. However, the length is equal when it runs as I see it. Can someone explain this difference and more importantly is there a fix ? Do note I ordered this using correct article references from my engine, quite a while ago and got another working one installed ... but that one is also up for replacement so got me thinking about getting this one operational. Many thanks ! Br, Martijn20220730_102942.jpg

The new one is not retracting all the way. See if you can push the teeth in further. If not, remove the solenoid and look to see that actuating arm and spring is in the correct position.

Thanks, going to try that and I have the old one to try first cause it looks tricky considering that spring ... But it makes sense what you say that it lacks the full length or spring tension to grab the teeth properly.

Bring old and new to a starter/alternator rebuild shop. They will figure it out in a quick minute.

Thanks, because I tested (see vid... low battery though) ... and the drive pinion pops out fully at the pinion stop. Bendix length is okay ... can't find the difference. Hmm, going to install it on the engine once again. If that doesn't work out I indeed get the experts to look at it.

My comment was the gear was not retracting far enough to disengage, teeth staying out some

Thanks. I reinstalled the new startmotor ... and it works fine now. I have no idea why two earlier attempts didn't work. The two bolt assembly is straight forward so no misalignment can occur. Somehow it didn't travel all the way up eventhough battery power was also okay. Anyhow, it works, see my video.
