just purchased 1986 sea ray Seville 17 have a 1986 140hp mercruiser and it will shift into gear and push the boat at idle but when you throttle up the engine revs but the boat goes no faster. I put a new hub in the prop and still nothing Also the drive shaft does move faster when the engine revs And the propeller moves faster when out of the water on ear muffs. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... It sounds like the vertical shaft mighta broke,...
It's been known to happen where the o-ring goes up at the top,....

Drain the drives oil, 'n look for metal,.... then drop the lower unit, from the upper housin',....

Do you smell burnt rubber when you throttle up? If you do, look at your engine coupler. That is the part at the back of your engine that connects the engine to the outdrive. It will spin like your hub on the prop and if it spins it needs replaced.

No smells but the engine sounds a different when it lets loose like on the muffs when I increase throttle it sounds like a motor going faster but in the water it gets more high pitch I would say it's definitely a different sound

If its high pitch like a belt squeal, then that is most likely the rubber of the engine coupler giving way.
