My good ol reliable 1976 Apollo with the Merc 165 carb'd straight six bogs down and tries to die if I punch it to WOT from idle. If I roll on the throttle a little bit and then go WOT it's smooth as a baby's behind about it. I'm gonna start with some carb cleaner but if that doesn't solve the problem, which isn't a big deal really as I'm not generally that hard on it, where should I go from there? I run on premium fuel treated with Startron religiously. Cheers.

Hi EZ. Have you seen this list yet? It's in the adults only section. I also have to troubleshoot a WOT issue with my boat (although the symptoms seem a little different than yours), and I intend to go through that list of 15 and test every one before letting myself get carried away and convincing myself its something else causing the problem.

there is no mechanic in a can, and spraying the outsides of the carb with cleaner does nothing

pull your carb apart and go thru the carb.

your accelerator pump circuit isnt working.

I'm not going to spray the outside. I vary between Seafoam and Startron sprays. I've had a lot of luck with both over the years.

wont cut it for your issue

you need to spend the $35 pull the carb apart, clean the passages and replace the accelerator pump
