My old Motor

First let me just say I am new here and hope I am posting in the right place. I joined a motorcycle forum years ago and made a mistake and everyone jumped all over me instead of explaining what I should have done.

I have an old Evinrude that I have had for many many years and it has just been laying around. I have no idea what it is except 22.5 HP and made between 1939 and 1950 I would like to pin it down a little further. It is stuck from sitting. The only identifying marks on it are the cast in marks on the top of the flywheel and the tag that is stamped 6041-02809 with no other info on it. Any help would be appreciated.

It's a 22.5 HP Speeditwin. This HP and model designation was made between 1937 and 1950, starting with model number 6026. In 1938, starting with model 6039, they offered both std and "5" longer" shaft lengths. Your serial number falls in the 1941 year. The 6041 designation indicates it was a long shaft model. They were not made during the war years 1942-45.

Lay the motor down with spark plus pointing up. Fill the pistons with penetrating oil and let it sit before you try to turn it over. Google freeing up a stuck OB for more details. You have a 50:50 chance of getting it running (at least that's my scorecard).

Thank you for the reply. All I really wanted was to pin it down to a year so I knew how old it was. I don't think I am going to do anything with it, I have too many other projects. I have been a mechanic over 40 years so I am familiar with freeing up engines and getting them running. My hobbies are antique British motorcycles (I have quite a few) and antique tractors. I also have a few of those, doing the valves on one right now and just did the valves on the one I am painting last summer. I have the proper service tools for both the cycles and tractors but I am not familiar with outboards for the most part.

The outboard is complete and undamaged, if you want me to post some pics I would be happy to do so. Nothing moves on it, and I mean nothing no controls or the prop or anything. Not even a little play. This motor has been sitting outside long before I got it and I have had it about 30 years. It was stuck when I got it with a load of junk. I thought it was cool looking so I was careful with it and didn't break anything. It was in it's crate when I got it but it was too rotted to save.

I tried a bunch of places and until here all I got was 1939 to 1950. I will have to take a few pictures, right now it has ice stuck to it. I just pulled it out of the weeds out by my burning pit where it has been laying for about 20 to 25 years. I actually forgot it was there until I spotted it after moving some stuff around, don't really know what made me drag it out to ID it.
I have a collection of mostly Triumphs like the outboards you showed 1954 through 1972 20 of them and 1 1970 BSA 1 1965 Norton and 1 1964 BMW my tractors are 1940s through mid 1950s.

Awesome pic !! So many of those look familiar to me from my younger (much younger) days working at the marina next to our cottage. A couple models you have there I have even owned myself !! Thanks for the memories !!

I was never much of a boating person but I remember my grandfather had a Johnson outboard like one in that pic too. Nice looking motors, probably worth something in that condition.

I'm a cheap sob. My routine price is 20 bucks. They are all barn finds. The cosmetic and mechanical restorations aren't really that expensive, but trying to recoup the manhours is a loosing proposition.

The Antique Outboard Motor Club is comprised of a bunch of old codgers that dwell on this old iron. Just like you and cycles. If it has no sentimental value offer it for sale. Someone will be overjoyed to own it.

I'm an older guy too, kids today, for the most part, don't seem to have the interest in the old stuff like we do. I think the outboard is cool, I did back then too that's why I saved it instead of scrapping it. It was in the early days of my towing company when I was hauling junk cars and any scrap they wanted to toss in. I would probably sell it if the price was right but it is worth a little to me to just have as art outside my shop.

Nope. Pretty sad. 113yrs and disappears. Their last model, Etecs, were as efficient as 4 strokes and the performance of a 2.... SkiDoo/BRP still use Etecs...

Not a fan of these new all electronic motors....when they run they are great, byt when an issue comes up, they can be quite costly to repair !! Gotta be a rocket scientist to figure out the problem. I will gladly take the older models which are much easier to problem solve and repairs while not cheap, are less costly then the newer electronic stuff. The added fuel use is chicken feed compared to getting an issue resolved on a newer one

On top of that in some areas the marina is a seasonal operation.----Hard / expensive to keep qualified mechanics on payroll in the off season.-----So yes the smaller dealer in a cottage / fishing area may have trouble repairing these high tech machines.

My etec, which I bought brand new, is an amazing machine. The fuel economy makes it worth it alone. At the end of the day it's still just a motor so you take care of it just like any other motor.

More sensors of coarse and the components cost more it sure runs nice.

This is where the future is unless they flat out ban them and we all run around with electric motors.
