Hi,

Motor was on old runabout and was able to get it started and seems to be circulataing water and shifting in and out of gear. It did seem to run a bit rough and had idle about 1500 RPM's. Looking for instructions on carb adjustment and or a service manual.

Model: VXL-10S
Serial Number: 2415552

Thank You

Those are a simple / rugged machine.-----Post your compression numbers here .----Need to establish motor condition before fine tuning.

Much thanks!

Compression was 80 on all cylinders but I want to recheck with a better battery. Battery is ok but not the best.

Still studying but I think the distributor drive wheel seemed off a few teeth not to mention the 2 bolts that hold the arm from the distributer to throttle linkage was loose. I attached a photo of the flywheel and side of distributer with respective marks in sight, (best I can), in hopes to confirm I have the correct marks, mainly for the distributer which was hard to decipher from the doc. The photos was after I changed the position of the distributor drive wheel mark to what I believe is the correct corresponding mark on the block which did not seem to make much improvement. adjusted the distributor arm to linkage according to the pages posted on this thread and 2 good youtube videos I found after much searching. Not much history other than prior owner said he had it to mechanic for water pump. Run and idles but seems rough. Compression was about 80 on all cylinders with motor slightly warm. Next will check points and post findings/results if I make any changes.

Thanks again for posting the pages from the manual!

I cleaned and adjusted the points and posted a video of low idle in gear. I know the throttle cam is not perfect. I was holding it to keep the idle as low as possible. Prior to cleaning/adjusting the points I noticed the Starboard side plugs were dry and sooty and the Port ones were wet. I did not change anything on the carbs other than gently count and close the slow idle/air and bring them both out 1 1/2 turns then leave between 1 - 1/2-1 turn out. At low idle did not seem to make much difference. Thinking of doing a water trail before doing anything else.

I also posted another picture of the Distributor gear/marks with the belt out of the way for reference to above post.

Wondering if it makes sense to do a tear down of the carbs at this point.

Any advise greatly appreciated!

Thank You!

Are you trying to perform belt timing? If so, you got it wrong. The magneto pulley mark is supposed align with the center of the safety switch, NOT the mark on the bracket. The mark on the bracket is for battery ignition models (you have magneto ignition.) Flywheel and block marks are correct.

EDIT: The mark on the bracket is also used to set the breaker points, not to be confused with belt timing.

Aligned the Magneto Pulley to the correct mark, (thank you for posting the pictures/instructions!), and re-adjusted the linkage and re-set the timing to the angle on side of block. Running much better, see video. I idled down as low as possible and in and out of forward and reverse. Took break then went back to start and had some issues getting it to start. After a few minutes was able to start again. I decided to pull plug caps while runnig and noticed no change in performance when I pulled clyinder number 4. I ran a spark gap testers and could see a spark but it looked intermitient. Also compared to other cylinders which all did not have any intermittent spark at the same distance of the tool as Cylinder 4.. I pulled the distributer cap and cleaned the terminals/rotor end with 600 Grit sand paper, (very lightly). I tried to swap out the wires but could not figure out how to remove the wires from the distributor, (did not want to brute force). Retested and same results - when removing cylinder 4 spark plug cap while running seems like no change. Went back and re-tested compression. Results. #4 62 PSI, #2 70 PSI, #3 70 PSI, #1 72 PSI. Wondering if Cylinder 4 was lower because it was not firing as much and thus did not get as hot. Will re-test when cold. Are these numbers too low on compression? Thinking perhaps this motor may be ready to send to pasture and start looking for a replacement. Thank you for all the good info/time/advise!

Thank you. I should probably rename this or start a new thread since it is beyond my first question. I was able to get the motor running better but its still not right. I think it may be the coil and or within the Distributer. I will update this thread when progress is made. Thank You.
