Hi all i just picked up a 1980 Mirrocraft 14ft aluminum for $750 that currently has an old mercury 40hp and really want a newer 4 stroke. I will be cutting the closed bow open and building a casting deck front and back out of aluminum angle and probably pvc board would a 15 hp 4 storke be enough or should i look at a 20-25 hp

The boat is rated for 45hp.

Grew up with same boat (older ) with a 50hp Merc

I would look for no less than a 40hp

so a newer 15-25 4 storke will not be enough then ? ,don’t know if i can afford a bigger 4 storke . Boat is only going to be used for fishing so doesn’t have to be fast

With minimal maintenance that 2-stroke 40hp will outlast a 4-stroke.

I would simply do the water pump maintenance and go thru the motor you have

Kind of what i’m thinking now if I don’t sell it ,it’s probably worth $2200 for the whole package boat, trailer and the older motor up here in ontario Canada then if it blows up get a nice used 4storke up upgrade to a bigger boat

I run a Suzuki DF25A on a StarCraft holiday 14. Very similar boat and it’s fine. I had 40hp big twin on it. That was fine too

It depends on what you want the boat for and how big a load you would be carrying. A 15hp would get you where you need to go, but you won't win any races. If you are just puttering around fishing it would probably be work out just fine.

Good to hear i’m now thinking about selling it and getting a nicer bigger boat in the 16-17ft range next year with all the nice factory compartments and live well instead of trying to build this boat like one of those . but being debt free would also be nice and i would be closer to the 10k range for a decent used 16-17ft boat
