Multi Function gauge for 2004 Yamaha F150

Hello,
I'm not sure if this should be in this forum or under the Yamaha Forum but I am wanting to install a digital multi function tachometer on my boat with a 2004 Yamaha F150 engine. I understand that there is or was a gauge specific for the older pre 2005 engines but I have not been able to find one anywhere. Everywhere I look it comes up "out of stock". My question is can a newer model gauge be made to work on the older engines? I've seen forum messages saying I can and I would need an adapter harness but all the messages I've seen regarding this were posted like 10 or 12 years ago. Is that still accurate with the gauges available now? What gauge model should I be looking for?

Displays are no longer proprietary to a particular motor or brand.

You will need a gateway to covert to NMEA2000, but once done, there are any number of multi-function displays on the market that will work.
