Hello, I have a 1978 70hp Evinrude, when I drained the oil from my lower unit it was a milky color. What could be my problem and if it is run again after replacing oil will it cause any damage to the motor?

Thanks in Advance

Im no expert, but i changed my lower unit's oil today, and after sitting for 3+ years, it was also milky. Im sure changing the oil would do it no harm, and would prob. be better for it.

terry,

A great percentage of lower unit leaking problems are caused by leaking fill/drain plug screw seals.

Drain and refill the L/U and make sure you replace those seals.

Thanks for all the help. I am replacing the fill/drain plug screws and seals. I won't be taking it out though until probably next weekend. I will let you know if it worked.

Thanks Again,
Terry

Hi, Terry.
Read this post. It may be of some help to you.
LowerUnits 101

While she is sitting there, place an old board or something under the l/u. You may find a drip of juice, indicating a bad prop seal or vent/fill screw gaskets are leaking.
