New(ish) motor is in! - Lifter tick?

Whelp got the Silverado Vortec motor in! Started up quickly but I seem to have a tick going on. Sound like a standard lifter tick? Should I pull the rocker cover and adjust while running? Is having a lifter tick semi common after a partial rebuild? Followed all the guides online the best I could.

Timing sounds fine as far as i can tell. 15w40 Rotella for the oil.

haha basically i didnt mess with the valves, crank, rods or pistons. everything else is either from the previous motor or new. does that sound like a lifter tick to you or something else? Im hoping I just didnt tighten one of the rockers enough.

maybe i should have rephrased that. "is having a lifter tick common for a guy that's never adjusted valves before"

It sounds like a loose lifter to me. It has to be really loose to sound like that though

That's not a rebuild. That is simply dressing the longblock

Lifter tick are not common. Something is either adjusted wrong or failing

I took the valve cover off and ran the motor. Found which one it is but when i tighten the rocker down it gets perfectly quiet and then after 30 seconds or so it starts to come back. Did it several times.

Time to do some diagnostics

Either lifter is bad or not getting oil (plugged lifter bore oil passage)

Roller motor or flat tappet?

If roller, swapping lifter is easy.

If flat tappet, you can replace the lifter, and go thru a cam/lifter break in 2 out of 3 times, you are good to go. However about 1 out of 3 times the new lifter eats the cam lobe

Im pretty sure its getting oil. As it ran I was watching the oil flow/drip down the rocker. Im about to go outside and run it a bit more and double check some things.

Possible that the rocker stud is pulling out? or is collapsed lifter a higher probability?

Put a straight edge across the studs

Both are a possibility. I always convert vortec heads to screw in studs

Ok headed out to give this a try. I kind of hope its the stud. Pinning a stud seems a bit easier and cheaper than pulling the intake back off and buying gaskets again.

Well not sue why i didnt check this last night. Was late and dark i guess. All other lifters are hard as a rock when I push down on the valve and this one is squishy as can be. Stud seems fine with a straight edge. Guess im pulling the intake.

I have experienced lifters that bleed down and then for some reason they just won't pump back up. Time to replace the bad one or maybe do them all

I have 16 others from another motor. Was contemplating doing all 16 with brand new and maybe even push rods for the heck of it but im conflicted. The chances one of my other ones also wont pump up is pretty low hopefully

Ended up ordering 16 new lifters, pushrods and rockers w/ ball & nut. Was only a bit more than just the lifters purchased locally so I figured what the heck.
