Well almost done “restoring” a 72’ 25hp Johnson. The motor was a parts motor I picked up but decided it deserved a chance because it looked so clean and runs great. However, there is a lot of play especially on the front. The play is up and down and upon inspection, I noticed the front (side) two mounts have a lot of play up and down. I also noticed the front mount near the swivel handle is missing a nut. Question, does anyone know the size and thread of this nut? I was hoping to pick one up at my local ace hardware. A new one online is over 10$ for the nut. Worst case I can try to remove the nut from my 71 Jonson to compare.
Also, my research shows I need to pull the power head, swivel bracket-from the exhaust housing to access the motor mounts to replace? I tried to tighten them but couldn’t get them to tighten enough to reduce the play.
In your opinion, is removal of the mounts worth the trouble? Could not find any videos online for this procedure (mounts replacement)
Any other fixes or tricks available to reduce the play? Like shove a piece of rubber under mounts? The steering bracket handle was broken off by the previous owner so he could mount it on his duck boat’s transom. This issue may tip me over the edge on the decision to replace the steering bracket and mounts . Found a few on eBay for 50-100$. The mounts appear to be 10$ a piece….

Pick up a 5/16-NC nut and a 3/8-NC nut.----I think the 3/8" is the one you need.

Thanks, I’m going to try and tighten that front mount that’s missing a nut. If it’s still super loose, I’ll let you know. Good to know you have the mounts . Thanks
