I have two GT 200 Johnson outboards that I would like to turn into one good Johnson outboard, one is a 1991 and the other a 1992. One is longer than the other and has the extender ring between the lower and the upper part of the motor. Will those parts interchange between the two to make the shorter one work the longer one? It’s on an older Grady White boat that needs a long shaft motor.IMG_1165.jpeg

Omc/Evinrude made design changes between 1991 and 1992 at least in the small motors...not sure with your HP motor.

Best thing to do is look up the parts diagram with part numbers and check to see if each motor matches.

If your lucky you can change the drive shaft and shift rod.....a little water tube adjustment, stuck bolts, broken bolts, corroded crap......see where I'm going to?

If your doing it to save money your probably not going to but if you like to learn and enjoy spinning big wrenches then go for it.

Thanks, i’m hoping to save money by doing this project but it sounds like that might be a stretch. I do enjoy playing with wrenches and to figure things out so I’ll probably give it a try.

As posted the 91 has a longer DSend than the 92. They will interchange as long as you change the driveshaft in lower unit. You will need to take the lower units apart to swap as DS is pinned

If you have patience and time you will be able to achieve your goals.

Lots of help here so the best of luck to you and if you ever get frustrated walk away from the project and come back later, always works for me.

Does anyone know the shift rod length measurement. I disassembled without measuring before I took it out. Closest I could find was around 23 inches.

would one need the shim tool when changing driveshafts or not if you re-use the old pinion? ive always wondered about that as manual says any changes to pinion or bearing housing/drive shaft and it all needs a fresh shimming.

The lower end project is complete and everything worked out perfectly. I started it tonight for the first time, but it’s not running quite right. Seems like it’s running out of fuel or the fuel may be bad from sitting.

The lower end project is complete and it seems to work as it should in my initial tests here at my house. I have yet to get it in the water as the engine seems to be running out of fuel after I started it.
