Hello,I have a 1972 Evinrude 6202d.The spool on the pull start assembly is not worn at all, I bought a new starter pinion gear #318447 and it fits very loose on the spool, enough that it binds with the teeth on the flywheel. Any thoughts?

Very odd.-----Is it a factory part that you bought ?----If yes than take it back.-----Teeth on the flywheel possibly damaged by someone trying to remove the flywheel?----Is the rope the correct diameter ?----Was the spring on the gear greased ?

Teeth on flywheel good, rope is correct. I can move the gear about 0.080 sideways on the shaft . I know for sure it’s the correct gear, don’t know why it’s so loose on the shaft.

Do you have the roller pin? Stupid question I know, but i've had the obvious pass me by more than once. :)

Yes have the pin installed. It just seems like the id of the gear is too big,I know that sounds crazy but it’s very loose on the shaft.
You must have gotten a bad part. I replaced that same gear a couple weeks ago on my little Johnson 6 hp and it worked perfectly fine.

Thanks for the reply. I think you’re right. I’m going to try another gear, that’s about all it can be.
