Full throttle in reverse little throttle forward

I bought this boat with a 90s evinrude 40hp that sat for two years. I finally have got it running (with manually giving it throttle) but the problem i am running into is when it shifts in reverse it goes full throttle. When i shift all the way into the forward gear it barely gives it throttle. When i opened up the control box the gears were worn so i replaced them thinking that was the issue but its still there after replacing. Any help is greatly appreciated

I could tell you the answer, but Racerone is correct. Your mistake is SO common that you need to learn about your motor.

Best of luck.

What trouble shooting was done on the motor itself.
I have tried adjusting the throttle cable itself and while replacing all gaskets i made sure to put everything back just as it was when i got into it

The one plastic part ( bottom of picture 1 ) in the control box appears have missing teeth.----Did you replace that part , with available repair kit ?

Well, got a lot on my plate, if you don't get it by 9 pm PST then maybe.

Hint though, it has to do with the box or the cables that come out of the box.

Think hard on that.

Does throttle cable move when you raise fast idle lever ?-----Does shift cable move first when you operate the control ?-----Then throttle cable as you move it more ?-----Remember when you operate the control the motor must be running.----Or your assistant must turn the prop.----And how did this motor run for you last season ?

There you go.----I would do some trouble shooting on the motor.-----Post the compression values first.------Motors / boats usually sit and are sold when there is an issue.

Well----5 or 6 pictures might help you.----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" on a test device?----Are carburetor high speed jets confirmed clean ?-----Is the VRO pump there or a conventional pump mounted to the side of top cylinder ?
