Manual says to apply 1/16 bead of ge rtv around each water passage on the cylinder. I see the three bigger passages but what about all these tiny passages? The tiny holes are on the block only. No matching holes for those on the head surface. Anyone have the answer? And what is ge rtv? Can I just use regular permatex?

Those holes need a good clean. As far as sealant is concerned there are a lot of quality products out there , just pick either your favourite or well known brand and go for it , just make sure you get the right type . Permetex is one I use , and Three bond

So seal around every little hole or just the 3 big ones?

Do NOT smear anything over all of the engine block surface. OR the head plate. There is a excellent chance of a impossible amount of suction. That will prevent pulling apart the block & cylinder head again.
Do a tiny SMEAR of G E Silicone Sealant as stated.
G M motors used it on valve covers. Difficult to separate if applied too much.
I did the thin smearing around any area needing it. Then pressed together and pulled apart. NOT SLID apart. You should see a perfect bunch of straight up spikes of sealant. Some spots not SPIKY ENOUGH ? Add a tiny bit of sealant there. Press together & pull apart until it looks even.
I found out that a electric Hair Dryer on HIGH heat softened the sealant enough to CAREFULLY and SLOWLY start it to release.
I prefer REAL GASKETS to the GE RTV sealant.

How do you remove the crud in those tubes if the have curves out of sight ? I Took the prop off of the motor. Put the motor in a 55 gallon drum with water and 1 gallon of Vinegar start the engine and idle for15 minutes. pull the motor & checked the amount removed. Almost 3/4 removed. That was good enough for my purpose. Yes Another gasket was needed.

Thanks all good info there. Still a little confused though. Manual says rtv around each of the 3 water passages. So that means no sealant used on all those tiny holes correct?

every little hole. look at the head. no holes. so any hole in the block not sealed will cause it to leak. You can use any RTV really. more important is acetone the head and block until a white rag comes up spotless. get a dremel pen wire wheel and clean out all the old stuff. id soak the pistons in engine tuner and clean all the carbon off and wiggle them side to side and up and down to make sure the rings are free though. stuck rings are a common way these detonate.
