Different takes . I usually get a fn small drill , like .75-1.5mm depending on size of your balls (literally ) and drill into the ball about 1/2 way thru then put the shank of the drill in the hole and lever ball out . Do what you have to and then refit the ball hole facing out , maybe a bit of sealant and then I get a wad punch just a bit bigger than the hole , centre it around hole and give it a small tap with a small hammer so as to pien around the hole thus locking ball in place . Having said all that them balls are smaller than the ones I usually remove .
But tapping a small thread in there is a good idea too
