Help me identify what engine is have. It runs good but I was told it was a rebuilt zz4 crate motor. Obviously it's not as it has cast heads. I have heard earlier zz motors came with vortec heads. The original motor was a 305. This looks like a 350. The reason I want to know is that I want to get a marine carb and starter for it as I think they're both automotive parts plus I'd just like to know what I'm working with here. Thanks in advance

Ayuh,...... You want a Edlebrock 1409 carb,.....
To Id the block, search up the block casting number, cast into the block's flange, at the back of the block,.....
'n those heads appear to be fuelie heads, not Vortecs,....
For the starter, they only come in 2 flavors, straight across, or the staggered bolt pattern,....
Reach under it, 'n see which you have,....

Look below the heads on the rear deck of the block. Looking for 6 to 8 numbers which are the casting numbers

ok so the casting number is 10243880 which I've searched and it's a crate motor but either a zz4 or an L31? Also the head bolts are straight across so what am I dealing with here? It's obviously a 350.

Does the intake have 8 or 12 bolts? It looks like older iron center bolt heads with 12 intake bolts. (could even be the old 305 heads depending on years) obviously as said the base is a late roller truck block.

If memory serves, GM offered a SP350/ zz4 "short block" which wouldn't have had heads, cam or other peripheral pieces and used a 880 block casting.... that very would could be what you have.

I counted 12 bolts on the intake. The valve covers have 4 center bolts which should make them vortec heads then? The heads have one sawtooth on the ends.

AVS and AVS 2 carb are NOT marine that should be swapped out for a marine carb

block is most likely a 1995 block (vortec block with the non-vortec heads) found in a few hundred thousand 1995 trucks

I'm not a chevy guy so bare with me. Am I just dealing with an old 350 ski mag with a swapped in block? my original post already says I know the carb isn't marine. That's why I am trying to identify what I am dealing with so I can get the appropriate carb etc. HP estimation on this motor? Thanks

That would be my guess
PO got a long block and put everything back on it

Could pick up a set of V-heads and intake for an extra 30hp or so

Ayuh,........ In my 1st post, it's whether the Starter bolts that are either straight across, or staggered, to identify which starter you need,.....
The head bolt pattern is the same for all Sbc blocks,....

'n as for the right marine carb, as I said, the Edelbrock 1409, is the perfect match for yer motor,....

Yeah that's what I am thinking as well. Ok should be more than plenty for this boat and what we're doing. Just need to get the carb and starter to make it safe

I have looked it to that carb thanks. What did this motor come with? A Q-jet? I think I have found a rebuilt pre vortec Q-jet for about $500 locally. Any good?

is it a marine motor? the last Q-jet to ever roll off a factory floor was 1989.

If you are thinking of swapping the heads, then I would also swap the intake, ditch the 3" of spacers and go with a better intake and then...... worry about the carb.

Yeah it's a marine q jet for 5.7l pre vortec. Again, I'm not a chevy guy learning here. I'm going to keep the motor as is for this season so just want to get the correct carb, as plug and play as can be with the linkage etc. ( I know it will have to be tuned). So the 1409 is the way to go then?

Looks like a truck starter? And by the way the boat is a 1998 Skiray sportster if that helps at all

Maybe, could also be original older style
The old style are longer then permanent magnet type

That motor should have a staggered bolt pattern starter
Ok when I get out later I'll take a look at the bolt pattern.
