They are known for having stringer/transom issues . Tapping with a plastic tip hammer , noting any sound differences ,then pushing in that area if the transom . Any screws that can be removed then probed with a small pick for dry shavings ,transducers , bilge pumps usually get screwed in . Any signs of stress in the gel coat . Next step other than moisture meter is a surveyor, probably 5-700 and might be worth it . They do not check the engine out as in compression, oil samples etc . They do look at hoses , clamps , through hulls , bonding , pumps, blowers ,wiring , controllers, gauges . Then you have wiring, bonding , check valves among a bunch of other things . So if your comfortable with your knowledge in those areas, he is not needed .Otherwise it's worth it . If you're serious about boat but might be questioning its integrity you can aways negotiate a price based on it passing a survey if a appointment is a week out or something like that.

Walk away. This 36 year boat has close to 100% chance that there is rot in the hull and/or transom . Look for a newer boat. In addition to hull, transom problems there are dozens of other things that need to be checked. Also I’d want to see maintenance records. I’d also like to know the reason the owner says he’s selling it

thanks for your replies , i will not be getting this boat
Smart move, hate to bring bad news, but just trying to save you some serious headaches down the road. Older glass boats are sun catchers for first time boat owners, can be pretty but often a pile of junk someone is trying to unload. Someone that has really maintained their boat and motor will offer all the receipts and a log on what has been done. When I sold my 1983 Islander, I had the receipts from original owner, second owner and my own receipts from work done. I also showed them transom had a couple small soft spots that would need repair in the coming years. First guy out bought it, no haggle, and still stay in contact with him.
If this is your first boat, consider moving to a much newer model or consider an aluminum hull. Far less wood to rot and much easier and cheaper to replace if needed. They also carry a higher resale value. Good luck in your shopping..!!

there on some videos of fixing a Thompson 260 . . .

I agree with the others, average quality boat now 36 years old, so about double of its life expectation.
