Are your Working or are you Driving? The Human Brain is Not very good at Multi Tasking. Don't say you are, as that would be simply an Over Inflated Ego
If being able to carry on a conversation while driving equates to an over inflated ego, I guess i’m guilty as charged…..lol

A conversation in a Car is Different than one on a Phone, even a Hands Free. The Brain doesn't function the same

TPMS is mandated on all cars 2007 and newer vehicles under 10,000 because the average driver was driving with near flat tires because they didnt know that you had to check air pressure
backup cameras were mandated on all 2018 and newer vehicles under 10,000# because the average person didnt look before they backed up.

Lane assist, collision avoidance, Automated Emergency Braking and a bunch more are now mandated on all 2029 vehicles.

the new infotainment systems will soon have more mandates.

there are driver distraction guidelines since 2013 soon to be mandates.

all the mandates because we loosened the nut behind the wheel and started giving drivers licenses in cracker-jack boxes.

Remember when Drivers Education was mandatory and you had to actually learn to pilot a 4000# vehicle. that is also when the manual explained how to service the vehicle.

now there are 30 pages in a vehicle manual on using the mandated controls and 50 pages saying dont drink battery acid or wiper fluid. we also need to have multiple TV commercials telling you to not text and drive.

Im going with the 2023 American Dialect Society word of the year inserted here for what has been done to the automotive industry.
And the more "safety stuff" that gets put in cars, the less the nut behind the wheel has to think or pay attention. I hate the safety stuff because in moments of laziness, I rely on that instead of checking myself. Check and verify ... but we don't have to any more ... the car will do it for us.

If people used them as a safety net instead of a first line defense, it would be so much better. That just isn't human nature. Let the car do it for us.
AMEN....and...AMEN.
Although my job required multi-tasking in some critical situations, and I wasn't bad at it, my opinion is that no one can text and drive.

I like driving. (real driving) My '08 silverado has no active nothing 'cept me, cruise and intermittent wipers. I can't explain it but I find it...relaxing? Yesterday I was up at 6am, left Hampton, Va. drove to home in Harrisburg, Pa......Then jumped in the truck again and headed to the marina in baltimore, Md. Nice afternoon boating day.....Got home about 9pm.

75% of the miles I put on are me commuting to work with the general Masses.... I usually carry on a conversation with myself, usually asking questions:

  • where did you get your license?
  • how can you justify cutting off 5 lanes of traffic
  • your going to fas.... your going to fast you idiot.... your going too....... dude, deal with it you caused the wreck
  • how did you flip your car on a bridge?
  • your eating cereal in a bowl while driving?
  • dude, are you seriously smoking a blunt?
  • dude, your trailer lights are not working, do you not check these things
  • Whiskey Tango Foxtrot are you doing, this isnt a turn lane
  • people, its a crash not in your lane, why are you rubbernecking
  • dude, you know that car is an unmarked cop.... dude, your screwed

and the wife wonders why I ask these same questions when she is in the car.

Just like today's cell phones, people are always looking for more bells and whistles ! Mostly to brag about, most have very little actual advantage. Dealers and mfgrs love bells and whistles as they are future income for their technitions when these bells and whistles stop working !
and amen again.

You missed my favorite:
  • Am I the only one who checked the option for a directional?

And here I thought their signals just didn’t work.
I think I must have checked the box for invisible mode by accident as no one ever see me coming.

Found this on another forum this morning about how the new tech in vehicles simply means a simple fender bender results in your vehicle being totaled.

In lieu of cut-n-pasting, here is the article.

The Car Manufacturers and the Government should also be charged every time a Person driving with only the Daytime Running Lights on at Night gets a Ticket. They stupidly have the Dash Lights to be on when the DRLs are operating, and people end up thinking they have Driving Lights, so they never turn the Lights on, so no Rear Lights. If the Dash was Dark, then people would clue in that they need to turn the lights on.
I know on Newer Cars/Trucks, most have Auto Lights, but the is an Off Position to the Switch on most Cars(mine only shuts the Light off if they are on, and will turn them back on the moment it is in gear). Unfortunately a Valet, or Service Tech usually turns the Switch to off, and the Owner doesn't see the change, and put it back on Auto, so...

What we need, most desperately is that all and any regulations be subject to a cost benefit analysis, right now the un-elected regulators have power to mandate things that should not be happening in a democratic society.
If people think there is no overall cost to this, well what do you think happens when insurance companies wind up totaling many more vehicles? You think your rates won't change? Think again. It has gone much too far.
I drive older vehicles because I don't feel that I should be "mandated" to pay for things I don't want, don't need and didn't ask for. Oh, and by the way, drove quite successfully for 53 years, without most of that stuff!

We don't need OnStar, Apple Play, the Nav System, Pay per Listen Radio, Paddle Shifters on anything but a Race Car,

TPMS, Blind Spot Indicators, Back Up Cameras, Side Motion Detection, Auto Braking, Jaywalker Notification, Distance from Car in Front, Lane Detection, Shake the Seat Warnings, Auto Dimming Mirrors, Auto Lock, Express Windows(up and down) with Passenger Controls lockable by the Driver, are all good Features

Ironic concerning the last few posts.
unfortunately, we are too far down this disposable rabbit hole to change it.
Drove home from essex Md. last night to harrisburg, pa. and counted a minimum of 10 cars, one 18 wheeler with no lights on. I can tell you as fact that "no lights" driving was rare in my early driving lifetime because you had to turn your lights off and on. And you knew if you forgot because the push/pull switch was in and there were no dash lights.
Turn signal " twist" light selector is a bad idea in my 2013 camry because every now and then it would get mistakenly turned off when using the turn signal and wouldn't be noticed.
I miss my foot operated, simple, inexpensive dimmer switch.
This is a part of the theme in this thread of trying to protect "us" by removing our responsibilities.
"they" don't want us working on our cars, goodbye DIY. Manufacturers want us trading every 3-4 years. And stated previously, I've learned that manufacturers are implementing subscription requirements for access to the ECM for diagnosing.
Will that render my current bi-directional scanner obsolete for newer cars?
Don't know if toyota has, but my new one is scheduled Wed. arrival. Will find out.
Anyway, inattentive, entitled drivers are injuring and killing people.

eh,
agree with the first sentence......but not with the last paragraph, as earlier reasons by others and me.
All of that tells the mother with the "baby onboard" sticker that she doesn't have to pay attention, so she can text on her phone while speeding in the fast lane with that kid in the car seat

I had one of those Square Yellow hang from the Corner "Baby" type Signs. It read "Are You Stoned or just Stupid". It got Stolen, and I have never been able to find another one
