Yeah the console shifted trucks have an electronic shifter which is very similar to what Mopar has used in the recent past. Buick and Cadillac also use the same style shifter…. You can still buy a column shifted Chevy truck though. Now most of the GM cars have a stalk mounted shifter similar to what Mercedes has used

My Silverado is a 2500 has no button to push for gear selection. Mine is column shift Just grab it and put it in gear and go.

Yeah our 22 2500 is normal column shift. The half ton has this janky thing. It works... just wasn't totally intuitive first time I got in.

On my 2024 GMC Denali 2500 with the 10 speed 10L1000 transmission, the column shifter is just an electric switch that sends what gear you selected to the transmission control module. There is no mechanical cable. I would much prefer something other than a column shifter since the shifter arm blocks the 13" LCD screen when you are in drive.

Maybe I should have said the cable on my Rams is used to engage/disengage the parking lock in tranny and F/N/R position. It uses switches to limit max up shift gear while driving

Yeah...my understanding is that the RAM is just like my GMC. All shifting is shift by wire. There shouldn't be any cables at all.

Personally, I would much prefer push buttons to shift the transmission or a small stalk on the right side of the steering wheel like my Rivian uses.

All this talk of knob controllers. Our XT4 has two knobs on the console. I can control everything in the infotainment screen, radio, phone, media, etc including some vehicle setting with just those two. Super nice. Caddy has that figured out. Never have to touch the screen and barely have to take your off the road when using it. Way better than any car I have owned with all the new tech.

That's one reason I like manual transmissions. Move stick into gear, let out clutch

Now I'm curious. Is it electronic shift or actuator moving a linkage external on the trans. I was under the sierra and vaguely recall there being some electronic device similar to a transfer case actuator. Not sure on the "allison".

Today's electronic transmissions have an ECM that controls a bunch of solenoids controlling the torque converter and all the clutches. Nothing is mechanical anymore

The T-case actuator is just a worm gear actuator that turns the selector.

Well thats what I mean. I have a slightly older 10 speed that has a shifting cable. Did GM just phone in something vs changing the trans or did they update the valve body for shift by wire and get rid of the cable. I don't know.

Edit to clarify: the cable is for P/R/N/D selection and nothing else.

The cable actually only locks and unlocks park. Some transmissions do that electronically but they always have the provision on the top of the transmission. We have a transmission unlock tool that actuates the lever. A zip tie can do the same thing. It’s only useful on the electronically actuated park models where there otherwise shifted fully electronically from the inside

Keep in mind when we push the GM vehicles in the shop, they have to come in on roller skates because they won’t come out of park or the parking brake locks itself, or both. Sometimes you can manually unlock park and then turn the parking brakes off with a scanner but other times it’s just quicker to use the skates.

And this discussion had come up on the other forum I'm on a few weeks ago... if the E-brake is set and the battery goes dead and you can't jump it in your garage (get hood open)... you're sol. Which is also dumb. But what are the chances of all that happening unless you own a colorado that fails to update and kills the battery.

Ram has a panel under the steering wheel near parking brake which can be removed to gain access to a lever which can be moved and disengage park
