I have an 2000 evinrude 50hp E50PL4SS was wondering what brand of oil I should use I’m looking to pick some up locally at the Walmart or auto parts store, the manual calls for high detergent SAE 10w-40 Sg or SH

I would stick with brp crankcase oil but I'm sure others will disagree.

I wouldnt get to hung up on brands as long as its one of the main brands and it supplies the grade of either semi synth or full synth oil you need .
BRP dont make oil any more than they make spark plugs , they buy it in from an out supplier , but they are not going to put their sticker on a bottle of rubbish either . There are a few "name " brands that sell outboard specific oils ,just go for the one most convenient to you . Its OK to put Yamaha oil in a Mercury for instance .

I was thinking of using Lucas outboard 10w-40 but it doesn’t have the SH or SG rating on it does this matter?

If your oil specification is FC-W, like a lot of 4 cycle OBs, that is what you should use in the specified grade.

Automotive multi-grade oil is not usually recommended.

Walmart has the Penzoil marine which is rated FC-W in the boat section of sporting goods. The rest of the marine lubricants are in the automotive section but the only other 4 stroke oils they carry is the 25w40 for the I\O engines.
