Find a wiring diagram online.----mastertech marine.-----Early 1990's V-4.----Wiring is the same / nearly the same as your 50 HP.

Success! Thank you all. Interestingly, the RR allowed the voltage to run up as high as 15.4V before it settled down to a steady 14.4. (V confirmed by digital MM).

If you are truly getting high voltage as measured with a known good meter check all your ground connections including at the battery terminal for loose or corrosion.
