Is there such a thing as peeing too hard? After I got my OEM water pump installed and a blockage removed, my '79 40 HP really pisses hard. It shoots out straight a good 5 ft. This is dead cold with the thermostat not open yet. The engine is turning about 900 RPM. Does this indicate a problem or am I just paranoid? I tested the thermostat and it opens at 145F. I replaced the poppet last year.

the device is called a telltale, because you can see it. It does not affect cooling.

If you do not see the telltale it defiantly effects the cooling.
Not exactly true. Telltales clog all the time, but the volume thru them is very small, so cooling is not affected if just the telltale is clogged.

The telltale is only an indicator that the waterpump is working. It does not tell the amount of water the waterpump is pumping.

Specifically, if there is no telltale, the telltale could be clogged or the waterpump is not working, or both.

On a lot of Merc's, you can remove the motor cowling and pull the telltale hose off the cylinder head water jacket cover and see if the waterpump is working. If the water is pumping properly, unclog the telltale, and go boating.
