Mercruiser stalls coming out of reverse

Hey Guys and Gals:
I got a 1996 Mercruiser 4.3 Alph1 Gen 2 in the shop. Put a new shift cable in as per shop manual. Goes in to reverse nice. Coming out of reverse it stalls. Restart, move shift lever to forward, it stalls. Kinda stumped. Adjusted three times, same result. Some help would be awesome. Trying to get it in the water for a customer.

disconnect both cables. move slotted adjuster to the bottom of the slot
push lower shift cable inward turning the prop ccw till locked and measures 6 inches , attach cable to bracket Shift control box to full forward attach plastic end first and then the adjusting barrel. Start engine verify fwd gear, shift into reverse adjust adj stud for reverse gear, tighten stud

Sounds pretty much like what I did a couple times. Watched Chris' video for adjustment. I must be missing something.

Probably not

To clarify motor was shifting fine until needing lower shift cable. Replaced cable and now have new problems, in short something wasn't done correctly.

If nothing was done to drive than it's the cable issue. If drive had maintenence done like impeller replaced than it can be drive or cable

The cable was shifting fine. I did the impeller, all the bellows, water and oil lines. I did the shift cable because I was there. I guess I'll pull the drive and see what I did. Have done this job 5 or 6 times and never encountered this problem.
