First family boat was a wood lapstrake 1957 Thompson 17' with a 50 hp Johnson of the same year.

My first personal boat was a 17' square stern canoe with a 1966 3 hp Evinrude, both of which I still have.

My first boat was a 14-1/2' edson bowrider with a
50hp merc 4 banger. Both boat and motor were early 1970's vintage.
The boat had a two tone , metallic blue glitter finish. (what a chick magnet)
It was a great boat to learn on, but my experience is that bowriders belong on a lake !

First boat...polyester canoe, paddle driven, 15' long....hell of a windcatcher :D . Gave it away to some friends who got small children for funning as we were moving and I couldn't store the canoe anymore. They gave it away when their children were beyond the age of canoes and moved to girls and mopeds. So...the moral of the story...give 'm something to get out on the water and they'll stay out of trouble longer

Re: What was your first boat.

Does anyone remember Cruizon Boats? My first boat was a Cruizon Ski Boat. Around 1960, my grandfather and a friend of his bought two hulls from Cruizon in Newport Beach, CA. They were 18' inboards. Cruizon also provided a simple transmission. They were plywood hulls. They had a front bench seat and then the engine in the middle behind in a box with a single seat on each side and a bench seat along the stern. You glassed them and then put whatever engine you wanted in them. My grandfather put a Ford Thunderbird 312 in his with a six pack on top. His friend put a 1957 Pontiac 347 in his. The two of them raced in a 60mph class in the 60's in San Diego. My grandfather eventually sold his to a tuna fleet to be used as a chase boat. His friend parked his in his back yard and took up golf. My uncle and I, picked up that boat in the early 80's, restored it and skied with it for several years. Eventually neither of us had anyplace to store it and my uncle was ready for a newer boat, so we sold it. All these years later, I would like to at least find a picture of one. I can find no information on any Cruizon that small. Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks.

A 15 foot freighter canoe with a 3 1/2 hp Westbend Shrimp...which we still have.

Hah!...I had a 3 1/2 horse Westbend Shrimp also! It was on a wooden homebuilt 12 footer. Boat was sold at a yard sale in the early 80's, Motor was sold the same way just a few years ago. Never could stop the carb from leaking.

Re: What was your first boat.

Talk about digging up an old thread,,, it's 3yrs old? Anyway, I was about 12 and my first boat was my dad's, a 14' Skimmers Inc. a plywood rowboat style, with a 4.5hp Champion motor, one of my friends actually beat me in a race, while rowing his 12' racing rowboat,,, lol,,, but, I heard the skimmers were fast little boats when some people put 18hp Johnsons on. It became a rowboat for me to exercise on, once I forgot to put oil in Dad's old kicker, and it froze up! Later on we gave it away, and he got a nice 16' Thompson with a 30hp Evinrude, flags, and all, and I became the driver because he didn't want to deal with the hassle. A few yrs later, the old 30hp threw a rod, and my dad got a brand new 40hp Evinrude to replace it. We did a lot of fishing, clamming, & crabbing, and I did alot of skiing off that boat, and all my friends similar boats. I lost interest after awhile, once I got my drivers license, and we sold the boat. Only to get back into boating , not long afterward.

My dad worked at a sheetmetal shop and built us a 10' galvinized flatbottom that was really prone to swamping the boat would get so hot during the summer we couldnt take it out in the heat of the day it swamped in our farm pond and is probably still there. what a great way to spend a few summers though. brought back some good memories

Re: What was your first boat.

1970 Glastron tri-hull with a 71 Johnson 115 O/B. It was my dads when I was a kid, bought it new. When I got old enough I got it from storage got it running and spent a few summers trying to kill it. It was that goofy "hydro-electric shift" Johnson used for a year or 2. When reverse quit working, it was going to be expensive to fix. But I still ran the boat. Just had to plan ahead, no brakes. Then the pulse pack went. Couldn't find a replacement for less than the old motor was worth. Left the boat at a friends house. Cover finally rotted away an the block holding the boat nose up fell out. I went to look at it one day and it had FILLED to the brim with rain water and cat-tails were growing in it. Looked like a frog pond.

Technically, I still own the boat. It's at another friends house. Sort of in long term (permanent) storage. From time to time I think about pulling the motor and bring it into the garage to make it run again. Just for nostalgia's sake. Funny, I have a shop where I can accomplish anything. If the motor had blown, it probably wouldn't even have kept me off the water for a weekend. But the stupid pulse pack killed my old boat. It was ugly, rode like a lumber wagon and the interior was shot. But I could buy a $100,000 boat tomorrow and I don't think I could ever build memories as good as I had on the old Glastron.

My first boat was Dad's "Dingy/ Tender" for the Crusier..L/U mounted to the bottom, Briggs vertical shaft direct drive ran it. 8 foot maybe.
Older brother had to Hydro with the old Merc "Mark 20h"...then next was a "Baby Switzer" back in Illinois..'round 1955 on the pix. The second "boat", at 14...ya drove to the water...in the pix. What I own now, 50+years later, is on "Show yer Boat II" page 10, last post...
Scaaty.."Still Crazy After All These Years"..Enjoy...
(thats me with my first Beer..but is was probably "Root")

My Dad crafted a aluminum sheet to cover the props on the road...hinged for water use. It can be seen in the pix. I think he got sick off going down the road, with EVERY car wheelin up along side pointing, screaming questions out the window. One fun toy. Used to (I was 14 then) hit the lake after coming down the hill to the beach...toot the horn, hit the water , hit the turn signal, and do the lake. Across from where we had a resort/type retreat, was a big horse farm, with a big sandy beach. mess of trees surrounded it, and there was no way you could get a car to it. Decided to run up and put tire tracks all over it...bet the people that didn't see us are STILL trying to figure that one out!

Re: What was your first boat.

an old 12ft lone star v bottom john boat that my dad bought to go fishing in. he didint use it very offten so he said that it was mine. I was only 10 at the time. at first it only had a trolling motor and eventually I got a 4hp mariner for it. I would get out every morning when the water was smooth as glass and try to break the speed record with that rig. I had it till about 5 years ago. even with having my cimmaron 18-ss I still miss that old boat.
