My guess would be that;
1- that is a replacement head
2- the burn marks were made when the original bolts were heated up to be removed
3- some of those bolts are from a Johnson - not your Evinrude
4- some of the bolts dont belong on an outboard at all.

Good luck!

Re: Evinrude: One overdone roaster to go

CastawayRay, I took a look at the motor. It got hot but I have seen far worse. I for myself melted almost everything on the motor. Including the battery cables right out the engine. The tell tail hose was no wheres to be found. There were molten blobs of plastic in the bottom. And the nylon base for the timer plate ran down the block! I tell you this because I rebuilt the motor in less than 2 weeks. And have been using it for two years with out a problem. Starts on the first or second crank and runs perfect. Cost me about 300.00 bucks for all the parts including, almost all the electrics, and gaskets!
steve

holy shiot stinky ... fire sale at the ol corral?
Hmmm, well, I dont feel so bad

Johnson bolts?? dont they interchange? arrrgh, so I have to get some replacement bolts too ... the motor is really clean looking .. .I actually found it some 12 years ago while I was out looking for heavy iron to drag off to the yards ... woo hoooo a trashed motor!!!! then got it home, and found it was toasted and stripped out etc, busted bolts ... but ah well, it is an evinrude, so it should be pretty decent once I go get a mapp cylinder and start toastin bolts ... hey, there are worse things to throw money away on, at least this keeps me out of trouble with the little lady, lol

While taking a break from the water pump job, I took some pics of the fleet and its assorted parts ... the number on the evinrude is 10022 10677 - so its a 1962 ten horse? it says sportwin on there, pretty little motor actually, cept for the rather cooked looking cylinder head

I spent a bit of today trying to get pic links to work, but maybe this will work for a few more shots ... http://members.fishingworks.com/seamasterz/

and click on the photo gallery, I havent messed with the rest, fishing spots and all but one of these days ..

thanks for the feedback everyone!

Hi Ray
I am not real sure what answer your looking for. I looked at your pics ( nice job). This motor doesn't really look that bad to me. The paint being off the head by it's self really doesn't mean much. While this motor shows usage with out maintance, most of what I see is cosmetic. I agree with Dhadley someone was messing with head bolts, head and gasket. This area will need atten. If someone left this rascal in my driveway you can bet I would see if I could save it. Never judge motors by their appearance. If the hard parts are sound, (has compression, bearings seem good, rolls nicely) then odds are pretty good you will be able to return this diamond in the ruff to service. As far as looks go. Remove everything down to the power head ( carb, starter flywheel, fuel pump, etc). Degreese, wash, scrub, blow off and repaint. A couple of Tempo color matched rattle cans and she will look like new. This doesn't take that long. Some guys just spray over the greese and crud. In my opinion this just ads insult to injury. I wouldn't get all fanatical about it ether, just a nice job. You seem to be concerned about heat, it does appear that some was heating head bolts in order to remove them. The thing I look at most for over heated motors is the paint on the exhaust cover. Using this as a judge your motor don't look so bad.

Re: Evinrude: One overdone roaster to go

Hi Al
I think she has potential, I just dont want to get in over my head, I am a half fast car mechanic, rebuilt a few motors in my day, but these liitle mutants dont make much sense besides the operational parameters of fuel spark rotation

Cant seem to find a head for it, head gaskets yes, water pump yes, but I do have to find out for sure what year it is, the ten horse number I have confidence in.

Any tips on getting those stuck bolts out? Mapp seems to be the way to go.

of coursem any tips for where to get parts would be appreciated

thanks for the help

long way to the water, short season ahead

Looks like more damage from corrosion (salt water?) then heat. Does the flywheel turn?

c/6

Hooty

Re: Evinrude: One overdone roaster to go

Hi Ray
Yes I agree with Hooty. It doesn't appear to need another head. Unless there is something wrong with the one thats there. I would replace the head gasket and install new bolts. Be real careful with mapp gas it may get a little too hot. I believe propane to be better(be careful with that too). Removing those old head bolts is going to be a challenge. Take your time. It doesn't matter what the head looks like on the outside (to a point) it is what the inside looks like that counts. When you get the head of the water jacket areas will probably be all white an crusty, salty looking, this is normal, clean it out as good as you can, just the heavy stuff. Just make sure the head is flat and true and the sealing surfaces are good, no bad nicks or gouges. mod#10022 is a 1961 10hp. You can get service parts most anywhere, OMC dealer, napa auto parts. Just my estimate, (ruff) this will take all of $150. in parts to have a dependable nice used motor. This is just a guess from the pics. Cost of your labor? Don't go there. Have fun.

Re: Evinrude: One overdone roaster to go

napa auto parts? Seriously? woo hoo!! I didnt know they dealt with them ... hmmmm, so its just a year older than I am, lol, the old man and his older motor ... it does look like a decent motor tho - the lower spark plug hole is apparently shot, the spark plug from the top doesnt screw into the bottom on, so maybe a heli coil would work - tho I have never personally put one in (and I used to fix cars for a living, go figure!)

there are bolts on the underneath side around the lower shroud ... they seem totally rusted, little lumps of brown that were once steel (really now, how much would it cost to put stainless on this beast at the price a company as big as OMC could get????? 2 or 3 bucks more TOPS? damn bean counters!)
anyways ...
have to finish up the water pump install on the old chevverlay today, then help the little lady with some curtains, then reinstall the toilet, lol, EVERYTHING IS GETTING IN THE WAY OF MY FUN!!!

but once cleared, time to roll ... I figure I could always just put a quickie floor in the Starcraft, hack some plywood into decking boards and just go with it, some cheapo patio carpet and bang together some seats, foam em and cover them with some vinyl, should look good and work well. Any ideas for a weatherproof heavy duty lazy susan sorta deal, I want to have swivel seats so I can steer the boat and then fish

so the parts list is helicoil, plugs, head gasket, carb kit (?) thermostat (most likely), the fuel pump is new from the looks of it

if compression is down, I have a ridge reamer and hone around here somewhere, how tricky is it to rebuild these things? I keep hearing about needle roller bearings, they dont use regular babbitt? (hmmmmm, no pressurized oil system, babbitt would be kinda tough)

The handle to the pull rope is melted, but not from heat, Ill take a picture of that today when on break, lol

the one woman hen pecking parade is buggin, Ill be checking back later

Thanks!

Re: Evinrude: One overdone roaster to go

hmmmmmmmmm - now, this PB blaster stuff is good stuff, how is it when you hit the heat to it? am I going to have one overdone roaster flambe? lol

also

Im getting a lot of feedback on overheating the bolts, mapp gas is too hot, propane is too diffuse,

soooooooo

would a can of tuner spray (the old TV tuner Can O Cold, cyrogenic stuff, god knows how cold it is, 100 below zero or something on those heated bolts help loosen em?

the rapid cooling should cause considerable contraction (in corroded crevices, sorry, couldnt resist a little alliteration!)

Hey there ray, i think the pb blaster is pretty much like kroil or mouse milk, they flame up a little, but they're not explosive. it really helps to let that stuff soak for a few hours, overnight is even better, just keep spraying it. have you broken the bolts off? sometimes that's the only way to really get penetrating oil down to where the threads are, figuring corrosion or other compounds. sorry for the general stuff, i couldn't view the pics.
