I have created a web-site (non-commercial) for 1957 Johnson Javelin RJE-19 and RJEL-19 enthusiasts. I am looking for contributors and comments, tips, photos, and resources from other Javelin owners.
http://www.geocities.com/javelin1957/
After numerous inquiries from RJE18 and RDE19 owners, I will support those motors since there are many common issues and parts. I welcome any contributions for those models. I don't intend to branch to all 1957 models at this it time.
Hi Borum22-
Just checked out your website - and found that it is the same one recommended to me by a guy selling an awesome boat on ebay! Anyway, I'm looking for the cover & hinge assembly for my RJE18. Do you have any tips on locating this? thank you! I'll send you my photos AFTER I get it painted with new decals!
Tried to get to your site, but it seems to have exceeded its bandwidth for a while. I'll try again later.

For Leslie: If you're not already checking eBay frequently, you should. I see motors there being parted out all the time, and lots of 35s. In time, you'll no doubt find your cover and hinge.
Incidentally, there is a 1957 Johnson 35 with the gold cover on eBay right now, going in two days, with no bids. $200. I think it's a Javelin, but I'm not certain. Short shaft, I think, and the owner says it runs. Search for Johnson 35, and scroll down halfway or so. No photo in the list, but there is on the page.

Title is "Classic Johnson 35" or something like that.
Wrong one. The one I mean actually has the title "Antique Johnson 35" and is higher up in the list. If you just search for Johnson 35, you'll find it as you scroll down. Selling for $200.
I can't see where it matters all that much. I'm not sure why the difference in colors, though, for the same model.

I have a 1958 RDS-20, also a 35 hp, but it's a year later than the 57. It has a gold and white cover, but it's a different engine, and uses the single-line fuel line.
Yes it's a RJE-18, and I can't figure out the dang year. If you say it's a '56, I'll believe you! I'm a dumbass and left the manual in the boat which is stored in a barn over the winter, and the moisture welded the pages shut on the manual. Now I can't use it, and I bought it on ebay!! Rats. Any help you can offer me is sure appreciated!
OK, Here's where you can see a copy of the actual catalog for the 1956 models. It's a non-commercial site, so I think it's ok to link to the page. You'll find photos of your engine, along with other info you may be able to use in your restoration:

http://www.old-omc.de/j_1956/john_1956.html
That's very cool. I love the photos! BUT it says it's for a Sea Horse. Are Javelins and Sea Horses the same? If so, that would save me a world of trouble. What is the difference between the two?
If I read the catalog right (look at the specifications page), the Javelin was a rope start and the Sea Horse was electric start. Otherwise, they appear to be identical. Look at all the pages from the catalog and you'll see what I mean.

I'm sure all the parts are interchangeable.

Anyhow, I love that German site. My RDS-20 is on there, too, and I have the page printed out and framed.
Wrong again. The Javelin was electric start. It looks to me like the big difference was the chrome plated wing and front door access panel. Otherwise, the specs are identical. Looks cosmetic to me, and weighs 2 lbs more than the Seahorse.
More info. Search for Johnson 30 on eBay. 2/3 of the way down the first results page. Someone's selling an an from a magazine for the 1956 Johnson outboard line. Looks like your Javelin is the featured photo in the ad. It's a Buy it Now for about $7. 1 day left.
