As far as I can work out this motor doesn't recharge the battery while running. Can I adapt parts from another motor to get a recharge feature on it?

yes it is possible. more trouble than its worth. does yours have a battery ignition or a magneto? if it has a mag just take two 1000cca trolling motor batteries. if it has a battery ign use 3. good luck and keep posting

Tinkerer2
Look on the carb manifold bracket, easiest to determine the position if you look on the opposite side that currently has the starter. If there is a circle, about 1 ½” in diameter, then you have a manifold that will house a generator. If you hook a generator to it, you can get away with running a live well pump and running lights on the way home. To run an alternator, it is comprehensive and not worth the trouble in my opinion. You will need a generator, (find it online, or if you’re in a rush, let me know and I’ll send you to a place that will want you to part with about $150.00.

If you search eBay, you can come across one within a month or so for about $40.00, You can use a voltage regulator from a ‘70’s era ford, and if you need the schematic, I will draw it and fax it to you. It should take you about 2-4 hours and three beers to install the generator, regulator, and voltmeter.

If you don’t use more power than starting, and lights on the way home, it may be easier to plug in a charger when you get back to the dock.
Good Luck,
Butch

Thanks rodbolt and especially Butch.

Butch

The circle is there.

I can get away with just using a charger, which is what I've been doing, but given a choice I'd rather be charging a battery than running it down while I'm on the water, although it should start easily enough with a rope if the battery dies.

I might keep my eye out for a generator and get back to you on the wiring if I find one. I'll have to find one on eBay Australia as postage from the US would be a killer on something that heavy, but it could be ages before one comes up here.

Tinkerer,
Keep in mind that you will have to have another pulley coming off of the flywheel as well. If you have a magneto type ignition system, you are using one pulley, if you can’t see another, unused one on your motor you’ll have to hunt that down also.

I understand the desire to charge while you’re running…that’s why I hunted down all the parts over a nine-month period for my old motor! However, I wasn’t working against the shipping handicap either. The generator only puts out 10 amps at about 3500 RPM’s. At anything below that, the charge is 1-2 amps.

You may want to consider a solar charger. Install a cigarette lighter, or similar plug and rig up the end of the charger to fit it. That way, when you’re not running you can get a ½ an amp or so trickling into the batteries. If you start with a full charge and your engine is tuned, that should keep you from pulling a rope!
Good luck…

Butch

rodbolt was right. More trouble than it's worth.

Thanks for the solar panel suggestion. I didn't even think of that, probably because I'm still stuck in 1960's technology.

Now I wish I'd bought the solar panel battery charger I saw real cheap at a garage sale a while back. I passed on it because I couldn't think of any use I'd be likely to have for it!

There is a place in australia called "super cheap auto", and last time I checked, they had little trickle solar panels for like $27 bucks AUD...

That would do the trick..

I am going for the next stop up, for about $120 they had large panels which would give considerably more current.

hope that helps.

rgds

Franki

Franki

Thanks. I go to Super Cheap Auto once or twice most weeks so I'll have a look next time.

too bad i wasnt here the engine you have has an alternator built in to it already the diode is on the right side on the flywheel ring near the starter 2 tan wires in one green wire out to the battery
