I assume poor base timing will contribute to poor idling and stalling, can you time this by ear/feel and not a gun?
Is it that critical at idle?
Thanks

Re: Base timing

yes no
get a timing light. set engine timing according to specs. improper ign timing can cause a major meltdown.
it also needs to be double checked at WOT.
but do it with a load or a test wheel.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Base timing

It runs a1 from just off idle to wot 5500rpm. Plugs look excellent, I even pulled the head at 5 hours for a quick peek.
Rebuilt powerhead, timing is set at wot (by the rebuilder I assume) however I re and re'd carbs, linkage and cables and am not sure about the syncro. Is there a preference to sync all 3 carbs at the same vacuum or is it by sight?
I really don't want to tie it to the dock and idle.
I have always timed my larger motors by ear but if that's a bad idea......

Re: Base timing

I think you're probably talking about the pickup timing. It's been my experience if you do the carburetor link & sync and then full advance timing, the pickup timing will take care of itself. Don't adjust idle speed with the timing adjustment. Do that with the carburator idle adjustment.

c/6
Hooty

voodoo,Post a model number for the engine in question. It will help to narrow down the specifics of the info we can give as to fine tuning this puppy.

CE65WMLZ.... we (here) haven't quite figured it out but believe it's a 1990 Canadian Evinrude (although it's painted charcoal with Johnson badges) 65HP commercial
