My 1997 115hp Johnson oceanrunner has problems with shutting down during idle. also runs like its spitting and sputtering.and only runs up to 4200rpms. When idleing it just shuts off and i have to crank it in high idle position. No problems with primer bulb going flat. Cylinders are functioning properly when you remove the spark plug wires and when I plug off carb air inlet they flood out. The idle problem happens intermittenly. The spitting sputtering happens a lot. I have ran all the bad gas out and have ran OMC cleaner and tune up thru it and am going to run sea foam thru it today.

Re: looses power

Welcome to iboats ja!

Sounds like a lean condition with the carbs. Each carb has a low speed needle. Backing them out 1/4 turn could improve the problem. After getting the engine to run so it don't stall, I would go back and adjust the needles individually until a smooth idle is aquired. This is done by adjusting the needle in 1/8th turn until a point is reached where the engine starts to spit and sputter. Then back it out till the sputtering stops.

It would also be helpful to know if this is a new problem for the engine or did you just aquire the engine with the problem. I you just aquired the engine and don't know the maint history or if you have had the engine for a while and havn't don a carb cleaning and overhaul, it may be time to do that. Maint history on an engine near always helps with the diagnosis.

Re: looses power

Well I have owned the engine since new and do the regular maintenance. The carbs were just cleaned 2 to 3 months ago. the engine runs smooth at idle, you hear no warning when it shuts off, but I'll try this. Thank you very much, going out today to try it on the water.

Still did not work. Any way it could be a vacuum loss. The fuel pump bulb stays hard after shut off.

Now it will not even fire off, no spark anyway it could be a power pack problem or plug wires.

Re: looses power

Could be. Do you have an inline fuse on your port side? Not familiar with you engine. Get a OEM manual asap as the cost is about 1/2 hour of shop labor rates. Check the FAQ's and see if any of them help you pin it down. Check and clean all your connections to the powerpack and also check your battery connection. Clean them well and if you have wing nuts on your battery dispose of them properly and put on a regular hex nut and crank it down with the proper wrench.
