Selling a 17' Bayliner... or trying to

I can't believe it... I've had the worst luck with potential buyers! 3 in a row that is and it's wasted my entire week. It goes like this...
Too many phone calls,
Lengthy negotiations,
More phone calls,
I've shown it then they've come back later when I'm not home to 'take a closer look'. I don't like that.
One guy drove around the block 7 or 8 times looking at it instead of stopping and he's phoned every day since the ad. started. He wants me to hold it 'on a maybe' for 10 days until he can get it 'checked out'.
2 of these people we've agreed to a price with, that I think is a pretty decent buy, only for them to vanish.
One 'dude' had come back 3 times, we worked out a deal on a hand-shake subject to a sea trial. I launched the boat and was waiting for over an hour only for this goof to vanish too. Has anyone else noticed people are going missing? :)
Why do some people do this? It makes me want to turn green, get funny eyes, grow really big, growl, then throw them into a collapsible table. :)
haha
I wish!
It's a decent boat in great shape (Volvo) that's been kept inside. It's sitting on a new trailer too so I don't think it's the unit, it's the people that are 'off' here.
Anyways, wish me luck! :)
When buying or selling "stuff" it takes a while to get the nack of sizing up the buyer or seller. As tommays mentions the deposit is the key - - all the rest are words.

What Realgun says makes sense!

My brother put a Sunbird out on his yard with a sign on it. He gave several guys the guided tour. Next morning it had vanished. One of them came back and quietly towed it away!

Worse - he had seasonal insurance and this was out of season. Not insured.

I went through the same bollocks when I sold my last boat. I even took one joker out on it, he said he would be back with the cash the next day, never heard from him again. If people say they want something, then change their mind, that's cool, just at least let me know they don't want it. I then moved it to a parking area where people sell cars and boats, and sold it the same day to a nice young married couple who wrote me a check right there with no fuss or bother.

The guy that was driving around the block and spying on my boat called today. He bought a different boat. I don't get it but at least he called to tell me.

It is hard to find a good 2end hand boat, but it is much harder to sell it.

I sold 3 boats within just a few months. The key is price and your ability to negotiate with folks. If you have a price in mind then set the price a little higher, that way it gives you flexibility. If you set your price right at what you want then dont want to budge a dime when someone makes an offer...
Anyway, depending on where you are at, put the boat out where it is highly visible. The three I sold where all sold in a wal-mart parking lot. 1 sold before I took it off the hitch, another I got a call within 2.5 hrs, and the last one was in the parking lot for 12 hours.
Best of luck in selling your boat.

I know the feeling as well. I have a nearly perfect mid 70's 4HP Johnson I am selling. Even bought brand new gas tank, fitting and lines thinking it would help. I watched 4 HP's all winter on eBay to get the idea of prices and mine is pretty fair. Had three calls, one guy said he's coming tomorrow to look at it and probably will take it, but he would call first before he came. Never heard from him again  .

water surge has a great idea with the walmart thing. Ads get expensive.

Jeff

Well here’s my 2 cents.

I have only sold one boat but all in all it went pretty smooth. I did it through an online auction on Ebay (I hope I didn’t break any rules by mentioning Ebay specifically). In the end I got a pretty good price and not that much hassle. Magster, let me know if you want more info on how to do this.

That's why I sold my 2 boats through a broker. I took a bit of a hit on the price, but it was worth it to let them deal with the "window shoppers". Now I'm in the market for a new Bay Boat. Can any of you tell me what you got, your address and when your not home?
Stalker

Re: Selling a 17' Bayliner... or trying to

I'm lucky in that we have a weekly paper that covers all of our surrounding area. It's free to advertise in but it costs $2.50 to buy it. It works great usually. Recently I sold a $40k. boat in there in 2 weeks without any hassle. I've just had a few tentative buyers... I don't give up that easy :)
I'll give the old Bayliner a wax and run the ad. again. Yes, I do want to sell it and I'm willing to negotiate but I'm not going to just 'give it away'. I'd like to get what it's worth or close to it.
I haven't replaced the 'big boat' yet so I can go out for a spin in this when I feel the need.
Honestly, I'm not mad anymore :)
That's my happy face.
I feel lucky to have what I do and some of these other folks are obviously a little less fortunate. I don't blame them for trying to get the best possible deal or if they get 'cold feet' from having to spend their savings account. I'd rather they'd have called instead of vanishing, that's all. Who knows? Maybe they could have caught me at a good moment and got a 'sweet' deal?
Anyhow, thanks for the responses you guys.
Stalker,
Thank you too and I'll send you an updated inventory and a 'good' time to stop by. I won't be waiting for you or anything ;)

One word magster - ebay!

People travel all over the world to pick boats up or get them shipped, sight unseen, no test drives, plus you can require a deposit before they even email you!

I have sold 3 boats, 7 cars and 4 bike's on ebay, and also 2 outboard motors. All of which i got the price I wanted and every transaction went smoothly.

Maybe I'll try that if this fails. I've never sold anything on eBay before.

Re: Selling a 17' Bayliner... or trying to

You won't get much for it on ebay. Because it is a big ticket item and you have no seller rating.

Sell it local.

Selling the Liner? Sold the Tolly? Or did you have another big boat? Whats going on??

Re: Selling a 17' Bayliner... or trying to

Hi Roscoe
There's no other big boat. There's no emergancy either, I just need a change. So I'm selling the Bayliner, sold the Tolly, bought a Bertram and I'm selling that too after I get the motor done (hopefully that won't take a lifetime!). I think it's time to 'expose' my boy to hot rods too since that's all he talks about. I found a (pals) beauty 67 Chevelle SS 502/5 sp that I hope to get and I'd like to get into a 30'ish diesel trawler too in the fall when prices return to normal. I remember all of my childhood rides in boats and hot rods. I hope my son does too. It's all good.
Thanks for asking :)
