I have a 1975 Johnson 50 hp outboard that is having reverse shifting problems. When I shift into F, it goes backwards and visa versa. The mechanic that I had look at it says that I need to replace the L/U. I received the boat and motor as a gift from my father-in-law and he said that the L/U was rebuilt before he got it. My ? is, could the gears in the L/U have been put in backwards and this is causing my problems?

First thing is to verify that your motor is what you say it is.If it's older than 1975,different answers apply. Can you post the model number ?

Do you have one or two mechanical cables coming from your control box (shifter) to the motor ?

Is the control box an OMC one?

DHP

2 thoughts, one is a prop that is pitched for counter rotation, and the other is even more bizarre. I'm not positive, but the LU may be a counter-rotation LU (for dual motor installations
