Carb installed--Burps and spits, but won't purr.

After rebuilding the carb and the fuel pump, I put everything together and tried to start up. Jets are set at the recommended settings, glass bowl is full, carb bowl is full, float is working properly. If I choke it fully, I can get it to sputter, start, and run for two to four seconds then it dies. Slow jet settings don't seem to have any effect. Could I have put something in wrong? The only thing I can think of is the gasket that goes around the main jet. Looking at the blowup in the manual, it appeared that the cork gasket is sandwiched between the carb body and the float bowl, ensuring that the only gas that gets into the chamber that the main jet sits in comes through the needle valve. Did I do that wrong?

To me its sounds as if your idle cicuit passages are still clogged, if you have set the idle mixture adjustment correctly.

what year, hp are we talking about? tell us the model # so we can have an idea where to start.

If it only wants to start when choked, it's cause it's starving for fuel.

I'm assuming you rebuilt the carb, did you clean it properly and blow out all the passages with compressed air? And this is important: make sure the float is adjusted correctly, it's adjusted by bending the tab, the manual should help you on that, provided you haven't done that already.

I don't think your '57 35hp has that main jet gasket on account of the adjustable high speed mix valve. But it wouldn't hurt it. May I ask which manual you're working from?
Did you remove the soft plug on the top of the carb and clean the idle orifaces directly?
(PS - you do have the top mix valve out 1 and 1/2 and the bottom one out 3/4, not vice-versa right?)

Sorry about not posting the info. Paul is right, it's a '57 35hp electric start.

I'm using two manuals--the Clymer and "Old Outboards". I know everyone here recommends the factory manual, but money's pretty tight right now so I'm trying to make do with what I have.

I did remove both the soft plugs, I used a carb cleaner spray on the passages and blew them clean, and yes, I did get the right needles adjusted.

The idle circuit is the one on top, with the larger of the soft plugs, right? That one is definitely clean. I can see straight into the orifices.

The float is set with the metal side down and the cork side up, and when it's closed, it's parallel to the bottom of the carb.

I'll keep trying. The last time I tried, just before the battery died, it idled for around twice as long. I guess it's possible that something is just settling in.

I appreciate all the help. I'll let you know what happens this afternoon.

It's purring now.

For some reason, the idle jet setting had to be started at 2 1/2 turns instead of 1 1/2. Once that was set up, everything was great! Getting wet on Friday!!

I expect you still have a bit of a blockage somewhere (could be something's a little messed up in the carb too, eg. a groove in the low speed needle). Carry a screwdriver so you can readjust in if it ever clears. Good luck Friday! :)
PS - the only reason I asked about the manuals is I know some of the limitations in the carb rebuild section of Seloc, and from what I've glanced at in Clymers. Part of the diagnotic procedure. :)
