Re: Johnson 9.5 Model # MQ 14 E
Great motors when they run right. I have six of them including a long shaft that I use for a kicker on a 22' cuddy.

They usually leak up through the mid-section where the shift rod goes through a black rubber boot. It is sometimes a pain when that boot breaks down because the screws that hold it in place can break, leaving you with no way to hold the new boot in place.

Some old guy told me that when you can't fix that boot, you could grease the shift rod and pack around it with silicone caulk, so I tried it, it worked. Good enough.

The second common leak spot is that black rubber exhaust relief on the back end of the engine block. Close off the hole outside the cover for a minute while the motor is running and feel to see if exhaust is leaking inside the cover. Sometimes you can't see it, but they tear a lot because so many of them are 30 to 40 years old.

They made the 9.5 for 10 or 11 years and sold tons of them. Talk about easy to find parts - you can usually find one to salvage for $100. or so and keep 2 more running for years.
