My Johnson 9.5 dosen't run with the cover on. As soon as I take the cover off it runs. My local dealer says it just an air or fuel adjustment but afer reading on this web site about other people with the same problem I'm thinking the exhaust seal might be broken. Where do I start to look for the problem or how do I look for it or is this motor not worth fixing. The Model # MQ 14 E Ser#J2850843 Any advise would be great. Thanks a lot

Re: Johnson 9.5 Model # MQ 14 E

Great motors when they run right. I have six of them including a long shaft that I use for a kicker on a 22' cuddy.

They usually leak up through the mid-section where the shift rod goes through a black rubber boot. It is sometimes a pain when that boot breaks down because the screws that hold it in place can break, leaving you with no way to hold the new boot in place.

Some old guy told me that when you can't fix that boot, you could grease the shift rod and pack around it with silicone caulk, so I tried it, it worked. Good enough.

The second common leak spot is that black rubber exhaust relief on the back end of the engine block. Close off the hole outside the cover for a minute while the motor is running and feel to see if exhaust is leaking inside the cover. Sometimes you can't see it, but they tear a lot because so many of them are 30 to 40 years old.

They made the 9.5 for 10 or 11 years and sold tons of them. Talk about easy to find parts - you can usually find one to salvage for $100. or so and keep 2 more running for years.

Kencook.com, marineengine.com, maxrules.com, ishopmarine.com.

Be sure to get the OMC Model-Specific service manual for your motor. The generic ones are pretty useless for the 1968 9.5 motors.

The parts diagrams are on line for free, and everything in the owner's manual is duplicated in the service manual.

What is the best way to get to that rubber boot?Do I have to drop the lower unit to get to it?

It is accessed from below after removing the lower unit. Follow the shift rod up into the mid section where you will see a metal plate with 3 screws. The metal plate holds the rubber boot. Be careful not to dislodge the water tube.

One other area that has several potential leaks is the exhaust cover on the side of the block. You can check that by spraying a little soap and water mix on the cover while the engine is running but still cool. Bubbles will appear.

I put a new rubber boot in and it still doesn't run with the cover on. I put some water on the side of the block and bubbles appear. Now what do I do, tear it down? Is there any way I could make it last this summer yet. Then I will just throw it out and buy a new one. Any advice?? Thanks

You cannot reach all of the bolts on the exhaust cover, but tighten the ones that you can reach.

You could vent the cover just above the carb throat. Should be a clear area there in the insulation.

Sure hope that exhaust gas is the problem if you do that. Are you sure the cover isn't hitting something when you put it on?

Re: Johnson 9.5 Model # MQ 14 E

I did drill three 3/4 inch holes in the cover right under the handle to try to get more air to the carb. I might be a redneck mechanic but I decided I can't hurt something that doesn't work. I checked to make sure the cover isn't hitting anything and I can't see anything. Is this motor worth puttting more money into????

If the compression is over 100 per cylinder and within 10% of each other, and if the appearance is good, I would say, spend a hundred on it.

Otherwise, sell it on Ebay as a parts motor and find a more recently manufactured motor. The 9.9 is a better motor, always was and still is.
