Re: 120 evinrude still acting up

Got every thing back together carbs are good and clean no ristrictions anywhere. Regapped to .040. I will try disconecting the Black and Yellow tomorrow and run it on the water.
I got a question about the warning horn. As I posted earlier I currently do not have one installed due to the fact I found it melted when I done the rebuild. That circuit is open. Are there any issues there or should it run OK without the horn hooked up?
I dont realy understand that alarm circuit.

With warning systems disconnected shouldn't affect the running of the motor.
Warning system uses an alarm buzzer with a constant hot wire to one side. The other side is an open ground system where every heat sensor, vro sensor and oil tank sensor completes the ground with the sensor/sensors are tripped.

Re: 120 evinrude still acting up

Would it be any thing wrong with hooking up a regular 12 volt alarm buzzer and maybe an indicating light ?
I got a 12 volt buzzer Just wasent sure if their was any thing special about the $60 OMC buzzer.

Be careful, if the resistance and current draw aren't close to the OMC buzzer you might fry your wiring. Check the specs.

Re: 120 evinrude still acting up

Still Nothing I gapped plugs .040 cleaned carbs tried disconnecting Black and Yellow Kill wire at power pack and still no power. Only thing different was it did Idle better. Still no power would not get on plane unless I lean foward and then could only get 5200 RPM at WOT.
Any more ideas?

I also checked timmng the OBJ way with all plugs out and hooked to #1 with 7/16 gap tester and put it at WOT and spun it over and its about 15deg BTDC Book calls for 18 BTDC but as OBJ stated in a previous post it should be about 4 deg less testing this way. I also checked all plugs firing at idle with flywheel indexed for each cylinder TDC and they all look great about 4deg ATDC at Idle.
I just dont no what else to check.

Somthing new Ive found. I decided to dismantle the VRO and I found a brown flat round rubber thing on the Fuel Pump side it has a circular tear in it about the size of a quarter. Could this be it?
where can I get parts for the VRO 2 ?

OK I repaired the VRO got an old one from local Mech and I got the diaphragm out of it and put it in mine. Dang thing runs great but still no power.
I thought I had it. NO plane off unless I lean foward in the boat and no more than 5200 RPM at WOT
where else should I look.

Any thing else I can try? Could I have a bad pulse limiter maybe? I can blow in both directions Im thinking thats right. Manual dont say much about this guy. I did notice in the FAQ on VRO it said to use the pulse limiter with the blue end. Mine has the black end and is probaly the original.

I'm stumped. Wish I can lay my hands on it. If you can turn 5200 and still not plane out I'd think your sub-floor is waterlogged.

Re: 120 evinrude still acting up

Sorry about that I worded that wrong it only planes off when I get my weight foward in the boat and then it planes off but only gets up to 5200 RPM speed is about 45 MPH at that point it used to run 60 MPH

Re: 120 evinrude still acting up (Want a Challenge?)

Heres the latest rundown
gapped plugs .040
repaired VRO diaphragm
Checked timing - Good
checked timmer base movement -Good
Checked all recirculation - Made adjustments now Good
Pulled and soaked carbs & checked float cal - Good
No water in boat
Checked fuel lines for leaks - No leaks
Checked primer - Good no gas getting by
All plugs fire on 7/16 tester
Checked Stator OHMs measure dead on to book no melting
Cleaned grounds on coils

So far only inprovement is alot better Idle. And engine runs smooth. Still no plane 2700 RPM and want plane unless I move foward. Then it only reaches 5200 RPM at WOT.

The only thing I can think of is to check spark while you are under a load.

You have a lot of posts, yet no one has done the basic tests yet.

What is the fuel pressure at full speed?

Use a clear fuel line temporarily and "T" in a vacuum guage connected to the fuel pump inlet. Look for air bubbles in the fuel line and for less than 4" Hg of vacuum at all speeds.

Set the timing pointer to the correct postion per the factory service manual.

Index the flywheel and use a timing lite to check the position of each cylinder at full advance timing while running. The cranking over and adding 4° is only to get you in the ballpark for initial timing.

Use the factory recommended QL78YC plugs gapped at .030" for best results.

What were the float levels set at when the carbs were apart?

Re: 120 evinrude still acting up (Want a Challenge?)

Ok I havent checked the fuel pressure I will do that. The floats are set level with the gasket surface.
Thanks for the reply
