Should I burry this mercury?

1981 Mercury 70 hp ob 3 cyl<br />boat sat for two seasons, ran it all last summer ran great , took it to dalehollow lake it started running real bad only running on two cylinders the bottem two should I try to repair or buy different motor?

do a compression test... if she has good compression in all cyliders, she's worth trying to fix IMO.<br />good luck,<br />MY

thanks for the reply mellow yellow<br />I did compression test and got no reading from top cylinder I hope I tested them correctly

Although these 3cyl 2 carb 70's are not one of my favorite engines...<br /><br />Are you able to afford a new one? or is dumping 1k into this one more reasonable?<br /><br />TMD

Hey marine doctor I dont think I want to put 1k in this motor I called a guy that can put a rebuilt 1990 Johnson 70 hp with power t/t with controls and prop for $2200.00 with warrenty I think I'll go this rout what do you think of the 1990 Johnsons? please reply

Jgregory I dont know alot about these motors but the information Im getting is if these motors run just a little hot the top #1 cylinder can easily burn up from not getting enough water to cool it was a bad design

the 90 jonrude is a good motor. what do you mean<br />rebuilt? what happened to it? what was done to<br />repair it? I'd certainly prefer a used motor that<br />hasn't previously blown up....<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

mellow yellow the guy says he goes thru the motors and changes the impeller and what ever else it may need I didnt mean it was a total rebuild

sounds good... am always worried that a fried<br />motor will never be the same. my cuz has an '89<br />and it's a great motor.<br />if your not trading yours into the guy, you can<br />part it out and sell stuff on ebay to make back<br />some of the $.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

well, u can get a lil more than that parting it out, but may not be worth all the headaches.<br />maybe someone here needs a lower unit???<br />safe boating,<br />M.Y.
