I have a 1976 85hsp Merc 4cyl engine (duel carbs)that floods out when you give it gas. After checking everything I found that the butterflies are not opening...any suggestions?
Thanks for your help

When you say the "butterflies aren't opening" do you mean the throttle butterflies or the choke butterflies? If you meant the choke that would be consistent with the engine flooding out. Remove the cover and check to see if you can manually open them. Does this engine have an electrical choke solenoid like most engines? If so check to see if it is stuck in the closed position. It may just need lubrication.

Thanks for your reply...it is the butterflies on the choke and yes they can be opened manually. Something seems to be wrong with the linkage where it is not opening the carbs up...the throttle cam on the motor is not opening the carb. Do you have any idea where I can get a picture of the carb hookups showing the cam on top of it? I have a mercury manual but it doesn't show this.
Once again thanks so much for your help

I don't know the setup on the Merc, hopefully somebody here has experience with that engine. When its working properly how does your engine electrically actuate the choke? Do you push in the key or what. Is there a solenoid that actuates the choke linkage? Can you manually overide the linkage? Is there something loose in the linkage or has a solenoid jammed in the on position? The choke is only supposed to be closed during a cold start. It will make the engine run rich and flood if it stays on (butterfiles closed).

troy;hope i can exp.this type "A" carb correctly, electric choke (flapper)closes when choke button is depressed, opens when released.when choke lever (manuel)is pulled up it chokes carb and will keep ckoking untill manualy pushed down,it literally overrides the elect. choke..there is no butterfly in the carb for choking.the cam you mention is the trottle stop lever that controls the trottle shutter.maybe its your trottre pick up that needs some adj.. hope this helps ,good luck...
