ok just rebuilt my first carb and it was pretty easy i thought! No major headaches when you follow the manual.(What is the red paint like stuff that seals the little screws???)

Took engine to a couple of engineers around my way to see if they would extract the broken bolts in the engine and was quoted £150 eek!

So I went out and bought some good tools to do the job myself. A mechanic has also given me a set of stud extractors which he says are made from Chrome-Molybdenum which is apparently two grades higher that Chrome-Vanadium. Should I give them a go???

The red stuff would be thread sealant/adhesive (Locktite). This helps to prevent the bolts from vibrating loose.

All advice I've seen on here suggests that easy-outs will break off and become hard-outs (regardless of materials).

Good luck.

Thanks, i'll get some Locktite!

Im quite confident about these extractors and so is the mechanic, he says the set of 10 cost him £100+ and if they break the manufacturer replace them. I'll only go so far and if it doesn't work i'll just continue drilling. Here's a link to an extractor that kinda looks like it - http://www.irwin.com/irwin/consumer...ttributeId=BMATT1000029&currentType=BM1000005

Nightmares, Nightmares.............

Drilling out bolts, what the heck are they made of? Anyway, as much as i tried very hard to start drilling at the centre of the stud and it looked centre, heck it even measured centre when i punched it. As I progressed through the drill sizes it became apparent on a few that i would be going into the block and leaving a little moon shape of the original bolt in its place. meaning that, of course my new bolts will not "exactly" line up with the cover. Is this bad or can I just reshape the holes on the covers to accommodate?

I also broke one of the easy outs into the block, I should bloomin well know better after all the research but I added another lesson to the board. No matter what material easy outs are made of, dont even try it, its a waste of time! Bring on the Carbide Cutter!

P.S. I got those little carb bolts out! Woo hoo!

It makes me wonder if i'll ever get there?? Any advice guys?

Stan.............
