First you need to ck the lower unit oil to see if its comimg from there, but it really sounds like unburned fuel mix, does the engine run aright?

The engine runs fine, is there seals in the lower unit that keeps the gear oil from mixing with the inlet water?? if so how do I go about replacement.
Bobby

I did that and yes it was contaminated.I pulles prop off and pulled the propshaft housing out. There is a O-Ring on the back of the housing,is that all I need to replace or should I drop the lower unit is't self and replace any seals or O-Rings along with the water pump?

Re: 80hp mercury 3cyl

Check carefully the oil seals under the water pump as they are the most likely suspect for leakage. Also the shift shaft but my money is on the pump seals.

If the prop seals were bad you'd likely see external leakage of gear oil, whereas bad oil seals under the water pump will cause a lot of oil to be 'sucked' out of the gearcase and replaced by water.

ps replace any seals or soft goods on whatever oil-containing parts you disassemble from the lower unit.

HTH and G'luck............ed
