I've previously posted questions on my '72 Merc 650 65hp motor....with much luck in the responses...hoping you can come through for me again! Here is what I have done and here are my issues...long, so please be patient w/me.

I have 1)rebuilt carbs 2)changed plugs 3) check compression (115 on all 3), 4) cleaned fuel lines 5) new fuel pump.

Okay, here's what I got....

1. finally got it started and it ran, but couldn't get water to come out of the pee hole using the muffs.

2. Now will not start again and after trying quite a few times, stopped cranking...heard a "click" from around the distributor, now no turning over. Battery was fully charged and fine. I had done a load test on it and it was fine. Was cranking quickly, then just stopped, clicked several times, then nothing. Now, when I put the load test on the battery, it won't hold under load...like it "shorted" the batter or something. Without the load, it shows fully charged.

So my questions involve the water "peeing" and the clicking/battery issue. Wondering if my distributor could be messed up, but don't know the symptoms of that.

Also, I did clear out all the lines for the water thingy and blew air from compressor through it to make sure it was clear.

Any and all quick fixes appreciated (smile).

How are you load testing the battery? This problem is indicative of a weak battery (yes I know you said it was fully charged -- but unfortunately thats not a good battery test). Outboards need to spin rather quickly to start so a good battery is essential. Anytime you hear the clicking of the starter solenoid and the engine doesn't crank, 1) remove, clean and reinstall the battery cables (both ends). 2) Put a voltmeter on the battery while cranking. If the voltage drops below 10.5 volts the battery is not providing enough current to crank the engnine. 3) Using a jumper cable, connect one end to the positive terminal on the battery. TOUCH the other end to the large post on the starter. Be prepared for a spark. If the starter now spins, you still have a power delivery problem (bad cables or bad solenoid). If the starter makes no attempt at turning, either the battery is bad or the starter is bad. Repeat the test with a known good battery (like the one from your car).

Thanks for the reply. Why would it be spinning really quickly and abruptly just stop mid crank if it was just the battery being bad, unless something made it go bad all of a sudden?

I used a battery tester specifically for testing function under load on the batteries.

I will try the volmeter and jumper cale to starter to see what happens. Thanks.

OK on the load test. Just wanted to make sure a valid test was being done. Can you turn the engine by hand with the plugs out? If it turns hard, there is a mechanical issue. Bad battery cables and/or terminal ends create resistance to current flow which can cause this problem. Connect one jumper cable to the NEG terminal on the battery and the other end to the engine block (unpainted area or bolt). Connect the other jumper cable and jump from the POS terminal on the battery directly to the large terminal on the starter. If nothing happens, the starter is bad or the battery is bad.

Re: Okay, what have I done NOW! 2 questions

Thank you so much Upinsmoke! I did what you said, and it started. Found out that it was the battery box I had that had a built in battery charger hooked to the battery. Bypassed that, and bingo!

Now, any ideas on the lack of peeing? When I took the lines off the exterior of the powerhead, I pulled a piece of plastic out, so I'm hoping it's only the impeller, and not the pump.

I took it down to the lake yesterday, it started and I ran it to see if maybe it just wasn't peeing b'cause of muffs or the plastic piece plugging it..or whatever...no peeing. Then it died...ugh..probably burnt the damn thing up...no motor alarm, but don't know if it even has one.

What do you think?

Sounds like the impeller is self-destructing. How long did you run the motor before it quit ? You should be able to run about a minute at idle speed without doing any damage. Did you try and restart ?

Re: Okay, what have I done NOW! 2 questions

I believe all together, it did probably run longer than one minute. I could not get it to restart. What have I done?! What are the possiblities of things I could have screwed up?!~ UGH...fix one thing...then I break another.
I do have a water pump kit and I'm going to put that on this weekend. Any suggestions on what else to do before I try to start it, considering I may have run it "waterless" too long? Thanks everyone!

Probably won't turn over if the impellar is out, thats just what happened to a friends merc, once you put a new one in, it will run like new.
