Re: Premix vs Oil Injection

a good thing about oil inkectors is that the fuel in the tanks will last twice as long as premix.

I don't follow this.

...because the motor isn't running because it froze up when the injection system quit working?

That's a good way to get oil to last twice as long. If you don't fix the motor just think how long the oil will last? Interesting concept.

I couldn't resist.
:D :D

if you dont like the stink and the smoke, run a high quality synthetic oil.

I always premixed in a 6 gal jerry can and then siphoned it into the main tank. I never trusted how well it would mix in the big tank and never knew how many gallons it would take to fill it.

I am running a 1989 Mariner 175 (efi) ski V6. Previously oil injected removed by previous owner. I have been using premix synthetic oil at 50:1. Engine is great at full throttle. At idle she burns oil and fouls the plugs making starting difficult. I am returning to oil injection because the engine requires a variable amount as set by the ecu.

I agree. I like shaking the can well to confirm proper mixing. I also use one of those measuring bottles available just about everywhere. This gives me an exact 50:1 mix everytime.

Re: Premix vs Oil Injection

that mixing in a jerry jug is great, however last febuary I got to put a 28ft mako on a string due to mechanic/owner ignoraance.
wind was 30 or so out of the southwest.
I was running from colington back to kitty hawk. right of the dock of the bay channel was the boat dead in the water and dragging anchor towards the mudbank.
got a line on him and dragged him back out to thick water.
boat had a pair of 95 225 jonnyrudes.
the mechanic did a tune up and convinced them that if they left the VRO rather than routine replacing them, they would spend eternity in purgatory.
the boat held 225 gallons, they had dumped 4 gallons of oil in and added the gas.
problem was the oil sat in the tank like a turd in a punch bowl. just as they entered the bay both fuel systems filled with solid oil and shut down.
like I say, I see far less problems with a well maintained oil injected rig than any premix with built in tanks.
neglect it and they all die.
like the guy that tells me the water pump is 10 years old and suddenly failed.
I explain no it worked a year and took 9 to take out a piston, and by the way the pump costs the same.
my reccomendation on the VRO/OMS is test the alarm system at least every six months, make sure it always self tets and replace the pump every 6 years.
inspect the lines and tank filter at least yearly. goes double for mercs on the lines.
the V mercs run a nylon gear, every gear failure I ever saw was accompanied by a rusty driven gear that ate the drive gear due to improper storage.

Re: Premix vs Oil Injection

I am totaly confident premixing my 6 gallon portable tanks. I have 4 tanks and a funnel; left over premix from one or more low tanks is added to another low tank. Only empty tanks and the appropriate number of pint bottles of TCW-3 are taken to the gas station. I pump in one gallon of gas, add oil, pump in five more gallons. Exact routine every time every tank........
If I had a large engine and built in tanks I think i'd prefer oil injection..... Hell, I probably check the door to the store at least three times before I leave to make sure I actually locked it........ I would premix a large built in tank if I had to, I just wouldn't like the second guessing. I can almost see myself paying a premium for the pint bottles so that I could read the pump; 24 gallons of gas, four empty bottles of oil on the deck.........
