Re: Premix vs Oil Injection
that mixing in a jerry jug is great, however last febuary I got to put a 28ft mako on a string due to mechanic/owner ignoraance.
wind was 30 or so out of the southwest.
I was running from colington back to kitty hawk. right of the dock of the bay channel was the boat dead in the water and dragging anchor towards the mudbank.
got a line on him and dragged him back out to thick water.
boat had a pair of 95 225 jonnyrudes.
the mechanic did a tune up and convinced them that if they left the VRO rather than routine replacing them, they would spend eternity in purgatory.
the boat held 225 gallons, they had dumped 4 gallons of oil in and added the gas.
problem was the oil sat in the tank like a turd in a punch bowl. just as they entered the bay both fuel systems filled with solid oil and shut down.
like I say, I see far less problems with a well maintained oil injected rig than any premix with built in tanks.
neglect it and they all die.
like the guy that tells me the water pump is 10 years old and suddenly failed.
I explain no it worked a year and took 9 to take out a piston, and by the way the pump costs the same.
my reccomendation on the VRO/OMS is test the alarm system at least every six months, make sure it always self tets and replace the pump every 6 years.
inspect the lines and tank filter at least yearly. goes double for mercs on the lines.
the V mercs run a nylon gear, every gear failure I ever saw was accompanied by a rusty driven gear that ate the drive gear due to improper storage.
