1992 Mariner 150 Ser# 0D124111
Removed lower unit to inspect water pump I installed about 6 months ago, all was well. Went to reinstall the lower unit and had a awful time getting the driveshaft spline to line up with the powerhead. With a flashlight looking from the bottom of the motor I could see a round ring like object blocking the bottom of the crankshaft spline where the driveshaft goes into. Got a mop handle and stuck it up there and lined the ring up and installed the lower unit with no problem. Any idea what this was? I have pulled this lower unit several times with no problem and ths is the first time I have ever noticed this.

Re: Driveshaft

It was probably the seal ring that seals the driveshaft inside the crank

Re: Driveshaft

Laddies,

Looking at diagrams this is what I thought it was too. How bad a problem is this. Is this a major failure waiting to happen if not quickly repaired?

Thanks for the replies.

Re: Driveshaft

Hi there

Its really important to fix this
The same thing happened to me and I didn't know about it.

The next time I pulled the shaft off, the bottom of the crank had corroded out.

I had to get a secondhand crank shaft and the whole motor had to be pulled down to install it
